Chapter 14: Returning to the Estate

The drive back to the estate was quiet, the heavy tension of the past twenty-four hours replaced by a strange, peaceful stillness. The autumn sun hung high in the sky, casting bright, warm light across the sprawling lawns and the grand entrance gates. As the car pulled up to the main portico, the heavy oak doors stood wide open, welcoming them back not as prisoners in a gilded cage, but as rightful inhabitants of a home being brought back to life.

Julianna stepped out of the vehicle first, holding her daughter securely in her arms. The air smelled of crisp fallen leaves and blooming jasmine from the courtyard gardens. Mark walked beside her, carrying the canvas bag containing the final court filings, while Arthur Pendelton followed with a relaxed posture that made him look a decade younger.

"It’s actually quiet," Arthur remarked, taking off his glasses and cleaning them with a handkerchief as he looked up at the grand façade. "For the first time in years, this house feels like it belongs to the people who live in it."

"It’s going to take time to undo the damage," Julianna admitted, walking up the marble steps. "Clara left for her downtown penthouse immediately after the hearing. She won't be back."

"She made her choice," Mark said gently, holding the heavy front door open for them. "Now you get to make yours."

They stepped into the grand foyer. The festive party decorations from the previous night had been cleared away by the morning staff, leaving the wide-open spaces clean, bright, and uncluttered. They walked toward the kitchen—the bright white room where the entire ordeal had begun. The counters were spotless, the sink was empty, and the terrace glass doors were wide open, letting a gentle breeze sweep through the space and clear out the last ghosts of champagne and melting wax.

Julianna walked over to the marble counter, gently placing her sleeping daughter down in the padded bassinet Mark had set up earlier in the corner. The baby shifted, letting out a soft, contented sigh. Julianna turned around and leaned against the counter, looking out through the open terrace doors toward the gardens where the sunlight danced across the grass.

Mark walked over and stood beside her, his presence calm and reassuring. "What's the first thing you want to do with your new life?"

Julianna smiled softly, the exhaustion finally melting away to reveal a genuine, radiant peace. "I think I want to make coffee. And for the first time in my life, I don't care if I wash the dishes right away."
