Chapter 1: The Weight of Crystals

The bright white kitchen smelled faintly of expensive champagne and melting wax, a lingering ghost of the celebration that had just concluded in the adjacent ballroom. Outside, the lights of the city sparkled against the glass doors, but inside, the atmosphere was thick with an entirely different kind of electricity. Two women stood by the marble counter, both wearing identical sparkly evening gowns that caught the harsh overhead lights, their hair styled into immaculate high buns that refused to loosen despite the late hour. One of them, Julianna, stood rigid, holding an infant bundled in a soft pink blanket against her chest. Her sister, Clara, stared at a towering pile of dirty dishes resting beside the deep white sink.

"Do it!" Clara snapped, her voice cutting through the quiet hum of the refrigerator with a sharp, unforgiving edge.

Julianna tightened her grip on the infant, her breath hitching in her throat. The sequins of her gown scraped softly against the baby's blanket. They had just returned from a charity gala where they were supposed to be celebrating Julianna’s return to public life, but the reality behind closed doors was vastly different. Clara had made it clear that wealth and elegance were merely armor, and right now, that armor required manual labor.

The heavy glass door leading to the terrace slid open with a soft metallic click. Julianna turned her head sharply, her eyes widening as Mark walked into the kitchen. He was dressed in a stark white t-shirt and a dark jacket paired with beige pants, his dark hair slightly ruffled from the night wind. He took in the scene with a practiced, heavy calm. Without waiting for either woman to speak, Julianna stepped toward the sink, her voice cracking with suppressed panic as she addressed him.

"She said I had to wash these first!" Julianna cried out, her eyes darting between Clara's icy glare and Mark's steady gaze. The infant stirred slightly against Julianna's chest, letting out a soft, plaintive whimper that seemed to pierce the tense silence of the room.

Mark closed the distance between them in three measured strides. His face remained carefully neutral, masking whatever storm was brewing beneath his exterior. He reached out, his hands warm and steady, ready to take the child. Julianna hesitated for a fraction of a second, her fingers clutching the pink blanket tighter, before realizing she had no other choice. Mark slid his arms beneath the baby, lifting her away from Julianna’s embrace and holding her close against his chest with practiced ease.

"Right now!" Julianna whispered fiercely, her voice trembling as she watched her child leave the safety of her arms.

Mark didn't flinch. He turned slightly toward the exit, intending to remove the infant from the toxic crossfire between the two sisters. But Julianna reacted with sudden, desperate fury. She lunged forward, grabbing Mark’s arm with one hand while pointing toward the terrace door with the other.

"No! Get out!" she demanded, her voice rising in pitch as panic finally overrode her self-control.

Before Mark could reply, a heavy shadow fell across the threshold of the kitchen. A police officer in a crisp, standard-issue uniform stepped into the bright white space, a black clipboard clutched firmly in his left hand. The sudden arrival froze everyone in place. Julianna and Mark stood locked together, their hands both gripping the baby tightly between them in a desperate tableau of shared protection. The officer cleared his throat, looking down at the clipboard before lifting his eyes to meet theirs. The celebration was officially over, and the real reckoning had just begun.
