Chapter 12: Chambers and Confessions

The double doors to Judge Harrison’s chambers opened before Julianna could reply, and a clerk in a crisp white shirt motioned them inside. The room was warm and smelled of old leather-bound books and pipe tobacco. Judge Harrison, a man with silver hair and sharp, intelligent eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses, sat behind a large mahogany desk cluttered with legal briefs and deposition transcripts.
"Sit down, everyone," Judge Harrison instructed, his voice deep and commanding without being harsh. He gestured to the leather chairs arranged before his desk.
Julianna took a seat in the center chair, Mark sitting immediately to her right, and Arthur Pendelton settling quietly to her left. Clara swept into the room a moment later, choosing the chair farthest from her sister with deliberate coldness, her posture rigidly defensive.
"I’ve reviewed the emergency injunction filed yesterday afternoon by Ms. Clara Vance," Judge Harrison began, adjusting his glasses as he picked up the manila folder Arthur had provided. "And I have also reviewed the master addendum and audio transcripts submitted early this morning by Mr. Sterling and Mr. Pendelton."
Clara leaned forward, her voice sharp and controlled. "Your Honor, those documents are unverified addendums drafted under questionable cognitive circumstances. The primary estate governance was established over a year ago with my father’s full and unambiguous consent."
Judge Harrison looked up from the papers, fixing Clara with a steady, unblinking stare. "Ms. Vance, I listened to the audio recordings attached to this master file three hours ago. Your father was fully cognizant, articulate, and specific about his intent to implement joint administration and protect his granddaughter's future welfare."
Clara’s jaw tightened. "The audio can be manipulated with modern software. It proves nothing."
"The forensic audio lab at the state university verified its authenticity at 4:00 AM today," Judge Harrison replied smoothly, sliding a certified lab report across the desk toward her. "Furthermore, the financial audits provided by Mr. Sterling’s firm indicate systematic transfers of trust capital into unauthorized personal accounts under your direct oversight."
The silence in the chambers became absolute. Clara stared at the lab report, her face turning chalk white. The polished facade she had maintained for years cracked entirely, revealing the desperate, cornered woman beneath.

"I protected this family," Clara whispered, her voice finally breaking. "While Julianna was running away from every responsibility, I kept the doors open."
"You kept them locked," Julianna said softly, her voice carrying across the room with undeniable strength. "And now, it’s time to open them."
