Chapter 11: The Courthouse Steps

The neoclassical architecture of the county courthouse loomed large against the pale morning sky, its heavy stone pillars casting long shadows across the wide concrete steps. A brisk autumn wind whipped across the plaza, carrying the scent of damp pavement and distant city traffic. Julianna pulled her dark wool coat tightly around her shoulders, the sparkly evening gown replaced by simple, practical attire she had managed to retrieve from the guest quarters before leaving the estate.
Mark walked beside her, carrying the canvas bag containing Arthur’s master file and the certified legal documents. Arthur trailed slightly behind, his steps measured and deliberate, his face set with the gravity of a man preparing to testify against decades of his own professional legacy.
"Stay close to me," Mark murmured, placing a steady hand on the small of Julianna’s back as they navigated the crowded steps. Flashbulbs suddenly flared near the top of the stairs—a pair of local tabloid reporters, tipped off by an unknown source, had caught wind of the emergency injunction filing.
"Ms. Vance! Is it true you're contesting the estate?" a reporter shouted, thrusting a microphone forward. "Are the rumors of embezzlement accurate?"
Julianna kept her gaze fixed straight ahead, shielding her daughter—who was sleeping peacefully against her chest inside the soft baby carrier—with both hands. Mark stepped in front of her, his broad shoulders blocking the cameras and his voice cutting through the noise with calm authority. "No comment at this time. All official statements will be entered into record inside the chambers."
They pushed past the heavy glass doors of the courthouse, leaving the flashing lights and shouting voices behind in the cold morning air. The interior of the building smelled of old paper, polished wood floor wax, and bureaucratic inevitability. The security checkpoint was routine, but the weight of what awaited them on the third floor was palpable in the air.

Judge Harrison’s chambers were located down a quiet, oak-paneled corridor far away from the bustling public courtrooms. As they rounded the corner, they saw Clara sitting alone on a wooden bench outside the double doors. She had changed into a sharp, charcoal-gray Chanel suit, her hair still pulled back into an immaculate bun, projecting an image of unshakeable corporate cool. But the slight tremor in her fingers as she adjusted her watch betrayed the truth.
Clara looked up as they approached, her eyes locking onto Julianna with a flash of pure, unadulterated venom. "You brought a circus, Julianna. How very predictable."
