Chapter 10: Dawn on the Estate

The harsh white lights of the kitchen slowly gave way to the soft, pale blue of early dawn filtering through the glass terrace doors. The festive balloons had deflated slightly during the night, hanging limply from the ceiling like forgotten memories of a different era. Arthur Pendelton had finally dozed off in the corner chair, his head resting against his chest, clutching his trench coat like a shield.
Julianna sat quietly on the velvet stool, her sparkly evening gown now wrinkled from the long hours, her high bun partially unspooled with loose blonde strands framing her face. The baby had finally woken up and was feeding quietly, cradled securely in her arms. Mark stood by the glass door, looking out over the manicured lawns and the mist rising from the estate's private gardens as the first rays of sunlight broke over the horizon.
"It's time," Mark said quietly, turning back to face them.
Arthur stirred instantly, sitting up straight and rubbing his eyes. He stood up, smoothing his rumpled suit jacket and checking his watch. "The hearing is at nine o'clock. We should leave for Judge Harrison’s chambers by eight-thirty to ensure our filings are stamped before Clara's legal team attempts any procedural delays."
Julianna adjusted her daughter's blanket, securing her snugly in the baby carrier harness Mark had helped her fasten an hour earlier. She took a deep breath, feeling a profound shift in her posture and her spirit. The fear that had paralyzed her at the start of the night was gone, replaced by a quiet, unshakable determination.
"What about Clara?" Julianna asked, looking toward the hallway leading to the master wing.
"Her suite is locked from the inside, and her car hasn't moved from the private garage," Arthur said, adjusting his glasses. "She’s either sleeping or preparing her own motion. Either way, she has to meet us at the courthouse."

As they moved toward the front foyer, the heavy front door opened smoothly, revealing two private security guards standing outside on the marble porch—not Clara's men, but operatives hired by Mark's firm to secure the premises overnight. They nodded respectfully as Mark led Julianna and Arthur out into the cool morning air.
The transition from the bright white kitchen into the open courtyard felt symbolic. The sparkly gowns and party decorations belonged to yesterday's illusions. Today was about reality, truth, and the hard work of rebuilding a life from the ground up.
