Chapter 8: The Unseen Ally

The deafening concussion of the flashbang shook the concrete floor, leaving a high-pitched ringing in everyone's ears. In the blinding afterglow of white light and thick, acrid smoke, chaos erupted in the laundry room. Shouts rang out in the dark, followed by the staccato, suppressed pop of gunfire as bullets ricocheted off the industrial washing machines, sending showers of sparks flying into the air.
"Down! Get down!" Julian roared, physically tackling Elena and Lily to the wet floor behind a heavy iron folding table.
Bullets punched through the thin metal of the table with terrifying ease, whining off into the gloom. Elena curled her body completely around Lily, whispering soothing, broken reassurances into the little girl’s ear while her own heart hammered like a trapped bird against her ribs.
Through the haze of smoke, a familiar silhouette emerged from the shadows near the utility doors. It was the hotel’s head of security, old Arthur, who had worked for the Vance family for over twenty years. He held a heavy-duty tactical shotgun in one hand and a gas mask dangling from the other.
"Vance! Grab your wife and move!" Arthur yelled over the chaos, pumping the shotgun and unleashing a deafening blast toward the doorway, driving the tactical operators back into the corridor.
Julian didn't hesitate. He grabbed Elena’s hand, hoisting her up, and scooped Lily into his arms. The little girl was sobbing uncontrollably, her white dress ruined by grease, mud, and tears. They scrambled past Arthur, bursting through a heavy fire exit that led directly into the underground parking garage.
The cool night air hit them like a physical blow. The garage was cavernous, echoing with the distant wail of sirens approaching from the street above. Rows of luxury sedans stretched into the darkness, but Arthur’s battered black pickup truck was idling near the exit ramp, its engine growling aggressively.
"Get in the truck! Now!" Arthur shouted, covering their rear as footsteps echoed from the fire stairwell behind them.
Julian shoved Elena into the passenger seat, climbing in right behind her with Lily clutched tightly in his lap. Arthur slammed the truck door shut, jumped into the driver's seat, and slammed his foot down on the accelerator. The truck's tires shrieked against the concrete, smoking as they tore toward the exit barrier.
"Arthur, what is happening?" Elena demanded, wiping soot from her face with the back of her trembling hand, her diamond necklace catching the dim garage lights as she moved. "Who are those men?"
"They aren't corporate raiders, Mrs. Vance," Arthur said grimly, his knuckles white as he wrestled the steering wheel to dodge a concrete pillar. "They’re an off-the-books security asset hired by the new majority shareholder of Vance Industries. And that shareholder isn't a board member."
Julian froze, staring at the old man in the rearview mirror. "Then who is it?"

Arthur didn't answer immediately. He swerved hard to the left, crashing through the automated parking arm and launching the truck out onto the rainy city streets. As they accelerated into the night, Arthur pointed a trembling finger toward the glowing skyscraper in the downtown skyline—the headquarters of Vance Industries.
"It's your sister, Julian. She never died in that plane crash ten years ago."
