Chapter 12

The tiny red laser dot danced steadily over the chest of Clara Vance's dark tactical raincoat. Clara froze, her confident posture rigidifying instantly as she looked down at the glowing red point of light. Across the harbor, the shadows of the high-rise container cranes shifted, revealing the faint silhouette of a long-range rifle barrel positioned on a gantry three hundred yards away.

"Drop the phone, Clara," a cold, synthesized voice echoed through a directional speaker mounted somewhere on the crane above.

Clara’s eyes darted frantically toward the rooftops before she slowly let the satellite phone slip from her fingers, letting it clatter against the wet concrete of the pier. She raised her hands cautiously, her face twisting into an expression of bitter realization.

"You're late, Arthur," Clara called out into the rain, her voice dripping with venom. "I thought you were at the bottom of the bay with my dear brother."

From the shadows near the base of the gantry crane, an elderly figure stepped forward into the yellow light. It was Arthur, his trench coat soaked through, a bandage wrapped tightly around his temple where he had hit his head during the crash, but his grip on the heavy tactical rifle remained rock steady.

"The truck had a manual ejection hatch on the undercarriage, Clara," Arthur said, his voice gravelly and exhausted as he kept the crosshairs locked on her chest. "Julian knew the moment the steering locked that the vehicle was rigged. He sent you down the shaft, Elena, so he could buy us thirty seconds to blow the ballast tanks manually."

Elena stared across the water at Arthur, her breath catching in her throat. "He... he planned it?"

"He knew he was dying anyway, Mrs. Vance," Arthur replied softly, his eyes filled with sorrow. "The neurological degeneration was already affecting his motor skills. He wanted his final act to mean something. He wanted to ensure that neither Clara nor the board could ever touch your daughter."

Clara laughed—a sharp, hysterical sound that cut through the driving rain. "You think killing me stops the transfer? The biometric verification was already initiated the moment the girl entered the building. The server is downloading the entire portfolio to an offshore secure node right now. By sunrise, Vance Industries ceases to exist, and every single asset belongs to the foundation!"

Elena looked down at Lily, who was shivering violently in her arms, her white dress stained with soot and water. Then, Elena looked at the heavy gold signet ring clutched in her bleeding fist. She remembered Julian’s final words, his calm, resolute expression as the water rose around him.

"The foundation..." Elena whispered, a sudden realization dawning on her. "It’s not an offshore account. It’s a trust in Lily's name."

Before Clara could lunge for her dropped phone, a deafening explosion echoed from the corporate skyscraper downtown, lighting up the entire skyline in a brilliant, terrifying flash of orange and white fire.
