Chapter 7

The sharp, metallic smell of cordite filled the damp air instantly as the three tactical operators flooded the laundry room. Their tactical helmets masked their faces, but their automatic rifles were locked dead on Julian and the stranger, who was now scrambling away from the washing machine, clutching a broken, purple-swollen wrist.
"Drop the weapon, Vance!" the lead operator barked, his voice distorted and metallic through his comms unit.
Julian slowly raised his hands, stepping back to shield Elena and Lily, who had woken up with a fresh, terrified scream. The red silk of Elena’s evening gown was smeared with dark industrial grease and soot, making her look less like a society gala attendee and more like a survivor of a war zone.
"We don't want him," the wounded man in the trench coat hissed, cradling his broken wrist as he stumbled to his feet. He pointed a trembling finger at Julian. "We want the girl. The trust protocol requires a biometric sample from a direct blood descendant to permanently lock the encrypted ledger. Vance is just the decoy."
Elena’s blood ran cold. She pulled Lily so hard against her chest that the little girl let out a whimper. "You stay away from her!" Elena screamed, her voice cracking with maternal ferocity. "If you touch her, I swear to God I will burn every single file, every asset, and every account to the ground!"
"You're in no position to bargain, Mrs. Vance," the lead operator said, stepping forward. He lowered his rifle slightly, leveling it not at Julian, but directly at Elena’s heart. "Hand over the child, and your husband walks out of here alive. Refuse, and you both die in this basement. The official report will list it as an industrial accident."
Julian looked from the tactical officer to Elena, his face pale, the weight of his terminal diagnosis suddenly feeling insignificant compared to the immediate terror of the moment. He knew the truth about the trust protocol. The man was right—the final verification required a juvenile biometric signature. His father had built it as an ultimate safeguard against corporate extortion, ensuring that no adult could ever unilaterally sell out the family name without the innocent consent of the next generation.
"Don't do it, Elena," Julian whispered, his eyes filled with unshed tears. "Let them take me. Let them do whatever they want to me. But keep Lily safe."

"Shut up, Julian!" Elena wept openly now, the restraint finally shattering as fat, hot tears carved clean tracks through the soot on her cheeks. "You don't get to play the hero now! You lied to me for three years! You brought us into this nightmare!"
Before the tactical officer could take another step toward them, the overhead fluorescent lights exploded in a shower of white-hot glass and sparks. Total darkness swallowed the room once more, accompanied by the deafening roar of a flashbang grenade detonating in the hallway outside.
