Chapter 4

The sudden plunge into darkness sent a fresh wave of panic through the corridor. Lily screamed, burying her face into Elena’s shoulder, her small hands gripping the red silk of the evening gown with terrified strength. Elena instinctively dropped to one knee, wrapping her arms around her daughter to shield her from the unknown.

"Stay behind me!" Julian shouted, his voice echoing in the gloom as the sound of heavy boots echoed from the far end of the hallway.

"Flashlights!" the stranger in the trench coat barked, his voice coming from somewhere near the elevator bank. "They cut the main breaker. They aren't just auditing you, Vance—they're sanitizing the floor."

A beam of bright white light cut through the darkness, sweeping across the cream-colored wallpaper. It wasn't the hotel's emergency lighting; it was a tactical flashlight. Through the dim red glow of the exit signs, two figures in dark tactical gear appeared at the opposite end of the corridor, moving with terrifying, silent precision. They weren't hotel security. They were professionals.

Julian scrambled backward, his expensive leather shoes squeaking against the polished floor, until he reached Elena and Lily. He threw himself in front of them, using his own body as a fragile, desperate barrier. "Get out of here, Elena. Take Lily down the service stairs behind the ice machine."

"I'm not leaving you," Elena hissed, her voice fierce and unyielding even in the dark. She reached into her small evening clutch, her fingers brushing past lipstick and keys until they closed around a heavy metal object—the antique letter opener she had grabbed earlier. It wasn't a firearm, but in close quarters, it was a weapon. "We go together or not at all."

"You don't understand," Julian pleaded, grabbing her arm. "Those men aren't here for money. They're here for the flash drive. The audit files are on it. If they get them, our entire family history, everything we own, everything my father died for—it vanishes."

The tactical lights drew closer, the beams dancing across the walls, sweeping methodically from side to side. The sound of their boots was rhythmic, cold, and inescapable.

"Mr. Vance," the stranger called out in a low whisper from the shadows near the elevator. "Over here. The maintenance shaft is behind the utility panel. It leads straight down to the kitchen."

Julian grabbed Elena’s hand, pulling her toward the voice while keeping his eyes fixed on the advancing lights. They scrambled across the open floor, their breathing ragged and loud in the quiet hallway. Julian reached the metal utility panel first, his fingers desperately clawing at the latch. With a sharp click, the panel swung open, revealing a dark, cramped vertical shaft lit only by a single flickering bulb far below.

"Go, Elena! Push Lily through first!" Julian commanded, lifting the sobbing little girl and handing her down into the darkness.

Elena slid in after her, the red silk of her gown tearing slightly on the rough metal edge. Julian turned to pull the stranger in with them, but as the tactical beams illuminated the space, the stranger was gone—leaving behind only the bloody leather briefcase on the floor.
