Chapter 2

The soft chime of the elevator bell cut through the tense atmosphere like a razor blade. Julian spun around, his heart hammering against his ribs, while Elena instinctively pulled Lily tighter against her red gown. The doors slid open with a smooth, mechanical hiss, revealing a man in a gray trench coat whom neither of them recognized. The man’s face was slick with sweat, and his knuckles were bruised and raw. In his left hand, he clutched a heavy, leather-bound briefcase stained with dark, drying smears of what looked unmistakably like blood.
"You shouldn't be here," Julian said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper as he stepped defensively between the stranger and his family. "This is a private matter. Get back in the car and leave."
The stranger offered a grim, humorless smile that didn't reach his tired eyes. He didn't step out of the car; instead, he rested his shoulder against the elevator frame, keeping the doors from closing. His gaze drifted past Julian, landing squarely on Elena and the crying child.
"Private?" the stranger repeated, his voice raspy and deep. "Mr. Vance, nothing in this hotel is private tonight. Especially not what you locked away in the corporate trust account."
Elena’s breath hitched. She shifted Lily to her other hip, the red silk whispering against the fabric of the little girl’s white dress. "Who are you?" she demanded, her voice cutting through the corridor with sudden, razor-sharp authority. "How do you know that name?"
The man reached inside his trench coat slowly, making sure his hands remained visible. "My name doesn't matter. What matters is that the signature on the transfer papers wasn't yours, Mrs. Vance. And it certainly wasn't Julian's." He pulled out a folded manila envelope and tossed it onto the carpeted floor halfway between them. It landed with a soft, ominous thud. "Your husband didn't just choose his career over you, Elena. He traded your family’s entire estate to pay off debts you didn't even know existed."
Julian lunged forward, kicking the envelope away before Elena could take a step toward it. "He's lying! Elena, don't listen to him! He's trying to ruin us!" Julian’s face was twisted in desperation, sweat beading on his forehead.

Lily let out another piercing wail, terrified by the sudden violence in the air. "Daddy, stop it! You're scaring me!"
Elena ignored Julian’s frantic protests. Her eyes remained locked on the manila envelope resting just a few feet away. Slowly, with deliberate grace, she knelt down while still supporting Lily, her red gown draping over the floor. She picked up the envelope and slid the flap open. Inside was a single document bearing her own forged signature, dated just yesterday. But what made her blood run cold was the secondary document clipped to the back: a medical report detailing a terminal diagnosis for Julian that he had kept secret for three years.
