Chapter 10: Plunge into the Harbor

The pickup truck skidded across the rain-slicked asphalt of the commercial pier with terrifying momentum, its tires screaming in protest against the wet concrete. Arthur fought the steering wheel with every ounce of his aging strength, but the electronic override had completely deadlocked the front axel.
"Hold on!" Arthur roared, throwing his weight against the door.
With a sickening crunch of shattered wood and splintered iron, the truck smashed through the harbor’s rusted guardrail and plunged nose-first into the freezing, ink-black water of the bay.
The impact was a concussive shock. Icy water rushed through the shattered windshield instantly, filling the cab with a violent, freezing roar. Elena gasped as the freezing brine hit her chest, the heavy red silk of her evening gown instantly soaking through and wrapping around her legs like a lead weight.
"Lily! Give me Lily!" Elena screamed through the rushing water, her maternal instincts kicking in with ferocious intensity as she lunged across the center console toward Julian.
Julian was already unbuckling himself, his chest heaving as he held the crying, terrified little girl above the rising waterline near the roof of the cab. "Take her, Elena! Take the window!" He slammed his elbow against the side window, but safety glass refused to shatter under the pressure of the deep water pressing in from the outside.
"Arthur! The master override!" Julian shouted, turning back toward the driver's seat.
The old man was slumped over the steering wheel, unconscious from the impact, blood trickling from a deep gash on his temple as the dark water rose past his chest.
"We have to get out now!" Elena yelled, her voice breaking as she managed to punch her fist through the cracked side window, slicing her knuckles on the jagged glass. Ignoring the pain, she ripped the jagged edges away with her bare hands, creating a small, freezing exit point.
Julian shoved Lily through the narrow opening first. Elena grabbed the little girl by her small arms, hauling her out into the freezing rain and onto the roof of the partially submerged truck. The little girl was screaming in sheer terror, her white dress soaked and plastered to her shivering body.
"Elena, go with her! Swim to the pylons!" Julian yelled from inside the sinking cab.
"No! Not without you!" Elena cried back, dropping back down to reach through the window as the water level reached Julian's chin.
"My leg... it's pinned under the dashboard," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he looked up at her with eyes full of profound, agonizing love. The medical diagnosis, the corporate betrayal, the decade of secrets—it all vanished in this single, freezing second. "Listen to me, Elena. You have to finish this. The flash drive is in my suit pocket. Clara wants the biometric key, but the real key is the ring my father gave me on his deathbed. Take it."

He shoved a heavy signet ring through the broken window into her bleeding hand.
"Julian, no!" Elena screamed, but before she could pull him out, the truck gave a final, metallic groan and slipped beneath the dark surface of the bay, leaving behind only swirling bubbles and an empty, churning expanse of black water.
