Chapter 1

The polished marble floor of the grand hotel hallway reflected the harsh, unforgiving overhead lights, casting long, fractured shadows across the walls. Elena stood motionless in her strapless red evening gown, the heavy silk pooling around her satin heels like spilled wine, a stark contrast to the sterile, cream-colored decor of the corridor. Her long, dark wavy hair cascaded over one bare shoulder, framing a face frozen in a mask of calculated restraint. With one delicate hand adorned with a heavy diamond necklace, she firmly gripped the small, trembling hand of four-year-old Lily. The little girl wore a pristine white dress adorned with tiny pearls and a large satin bow, but her appearance was ruined by the frantic, genuine terror racking her small frame. Lily stared back toward the elevators, her face slick with tears.
"Daddy!" Lily sobbed, her voice cracking with raw, unfiltered panic as she tried to pull her hand away from Elena's unyielding grip.
Elena did not flinch, though a muscle twitched sharply in her jaw. She tightened her fingers around the child's wrist just enough to keep her anchored.
Heavy, frantic footsteps echoed down the corridor, shattering the heavy silence. Julian burst into view, his dark suit jacket rumpled, his tie slightly loosened, and his breathing coming in ragged, desperate gasps. He had run all the way from the underground parking garage, his face pale with adrenaline and sheer terror.
"Give me my daughter!" Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the high ceilings with a desperate, cracking resonance as he closed the distance between them.
Elena slowly turned her head, her dark eyes locking onto his with a fierce, burning resentment that had been simmering for years. The diamond necklace flashed coldly under the lights.
"You always choose her!" Elena yelled back, her voice shaking with a dangerous mixture of fury and profound, ancient heartbreak. "You never cared about what we built, Julian! You only care about keeping up appearances!"
"Mommy, please, I'm scared!" Lily cried out, her voice pitching higher as she buried her face against the folds of Elena's red gown, her small body trembling violently.

Julian reached out a trembling hand, stopping just inches away from them, his chest heaving as he stared into Elena’s cold eyes. "Elena, put the knife down. You don't know what you're holding."
Elena froze, her expression shifting from anger to absolute horror as she looked down at her free hand, realizing the heavy silver object she clutched was not a phone, but the antique letter opener she had grabbed from the suite desk. And then, the elevator doors behind Julian chimed, opening to reveal a stranger holding a bloodstained briefcase.
