Chapter 8 - The Perimeter Chase

The heavy silver briefcase struck the lead agent’s shoulder, spinning him off balance just enough for Marcus to clear the stone steps and dive into the dense manicured hedges lining the property boundary.

“Target is moving toward the east perimeter!” the lead agent shouted into his shoulder radio, ignoring the pain in his arm as he recovered his footing. “Cut him off at the service road!”

Julian vaulted over the garden retaining wall, his black suit jacket tearing slightly on a wrought-iron fence post as he chased his brother through the dark labyrinth of the estate's sprawling hedge maze. The flashing red-and-blue lights from the police cruisers at the front gates cast long, distorted shadows that danced frantically across the boxwood walls.

Clara stood alone in the center of the courtyard, the cold night wind whipping her messy blonde hair across her face. The beige apron she wore felt heavy and suffocating, soaked in soapy water and the bitter reality of a world she never wanted to understand. She looked down at her hands, still smelling faintly of industrial cleaning chemicals, and made a silent vow. No matter what happened tonight, she was walking out of these gates the second the police cleared the perimeter.

From the shadows near the service garage, a muffled sound caught her attention—a sharp gasp followed by the scraping of gravel.

Clara froze, turning slowly toward the darkness of the open garage doors. “Hello?” she called out, her voice barely louder than a whisper.

A figure stumbled out from the gloom, clutching a torn emerald satin dress and gasping for breath. It was Vivienne. Her makeup was smeared across her cheeks like war paint, her styled blonde hair completely undone, hanging in damp, tangled strands around her face. She looked desperate, cornered, and entirely unhinged.

“You,” Vivienne spat, pointing a trembling, manicured finger at Clara. “This is all your fault. If you hadn’t dumped that pot of water on me, none of this would have happened.”

Clara took a cautious step backward, keeping her eyes fixed on Vivienne’s erratic movements. “I didn’t do anything, Mrs. Vance. I was just cleaning the courtyard.”

Vivienne let out a shrill, hysterical laugh that echoed off the concrete walls of the garage. She reached behind her back, pulling a heavy leather vanity case out from the shadows. “You think Julian is the victim here? You think Marcus is the only monster in this family?” Vivienne’s green eyes flashed with dangerous mania. “Open that gate for me, or I swear to God, I will pin every single one of these federal indictments on your name.”

Before Clara could respond, the screech of tires echoed from the service road outside, followed by a violent crash that shook the ground beneath their feet.
