Chapter 3 - Unwelcome Arrivals

The heavy tires crunched loudly over the gravel driveway, kicking up a cloud of dust that mixed with the lingering scent of expensive champagne and soapy water. The doors of the lead SUV flew open simultaneously, and four men in sharp, charcoal-gray suits stepped out into the night. They did not look like local police officers; their bearing was military, precise, and entirely devoid of emotion.

Julian lowered his phone slowly, his eyes narrowing as the lead man approached them with a leather portfolio tucked under his arm.

“Mr. Julian Vance?” the man asked, his voice flat and authoritative. “And Mrs. Vivienne Vance. We represent the global asset recovery division of Sterling & Thorne.”

Vivienne stepped back, clutching her wet satin dress around her as if it could somehow shield her from the new threat. “Sterling & Thorne? That’s impossible. My financial holdings are protected by international privacy laws.”

The lead agent, a man with salt-and-pepper hair and cold steel-blue eyes, opened his portfolio and extracted a crisp, multi-page legal document stamped with a federal court seal.

“Privacy laws do not apply to funds acquired through corporate embezzlement and the liquidation of a deceased person’s estate under fraudulent pretenses,” the agent replied smoothly. He glanced briefly at Clara, who was still standing near the gate, then back to Julian. “Mr. Vance, your father’s estate was flagged forty-eight hours ago. We have a freeze order on every account associated with this residence, including the offshore trusts.”

Julian didn’t look surprised; instead, a grim sense of validation crossed his face. He looked at Vivienne, whose face had gone completely bloodless.

“You didn’t just ruin my life, Vivienne,” Julian said quietly. “You built an empire on sand, and the tide has finally come in.”

Vivienne suddenly lunged forward, her desperation overriding her shock. She tried to grab the portfolio from the agent’s hands, but he sidestepped her with practiced ease, letting her stumble onto the wet gravel.

“This is a mistake! My lawyer will tear this apart by morning!” Vivienne screamed from the ground, her manicured nails digging into the dirt.

Clara watched the scene unfold with a mixture of pity and disbelief. She quietly picked up her backpack from the patio table where she had left her uniform change and car keys. She needed to get away from these toxic, wealthy people immediately.

“Excuse me,” Clara said, her voice cutting through the tension. “My shift is over. I’m leaving.”

“Stop her!” Vivienne shrieked from the ground, pointing a trembling finger at Clara. “She’s Julian’s accomplice! She helped him smuggle documents out of the study!”

The lead agent raised a hand, and two of the suits instantly blocked Clara’s path to the gate. The agent turned to Clara, his expression unreadable.

“I’m afraid no one leaves the premises until our digital forensics team secures the grounds,” the agent stated firmly. “Miss... what is your name?”

“Clara,” she said, her voice shaking with rising panic. “Clara Hayes. I am a temp from CleanPro Agency. I have nothing to do with this family’s crimes.”

The agent nodded slowly, pulling a small tablet from his coat and tapping the screen. A moment later, his expression shifted subtly as he read the incoming data.

“Well, Miss Hayes,” the agent said, looking up from the tablet with a faint, unsettling smirk. “According to our database, your employment agency isn’t registered under CleanPro. In fact, that tax ID belongs to a shell corporation registered three days ago under Julian Vance’s personal asset management firm.”

Clara gasped, dropping her backpack as the ground seemed to fall away beneath her feet. She spun around to face Julian, her eyes burning with betrayal. “You lied to me?”
