Chapter 12 - The Midnight Walkaway

Julian’s hurried footsteps crunched over the gravel as he closed the distance between them, stopping just a few feet away. Clara didn’t turn around immediately; she stared out past the wrought-iron gates toward the quiet, normal suburban street where streetlights flickered warmly against the night. It looked like a different universe compared to the nightmare she was leaving behind.

“Clara, please,” Julian said softly, his voice devoid of its former arrogance or corporate authority. It sounded tired, broken, and genuinely remorseful. “I know I dragged you into a war you never asked for. Let me at least arrange transport for you. It’s nearly three in the morning.”

Clara finally turned to face him, the harsh porch light catching the dark circles under her eyes and the smudge of dirt on her cheek. She looked at the man who had once seemed like just another ruthless billionaire, but now looked like a ghost of a man stripped of everything he thought defined him.

“I don’t want your money, Mr. Vance,” Clara said, her voice steady and chillingly calm. “I don’t want your transport, your apologies, or your charity. I just want to go home, take a hot shower, and try to pass my college exams tomorrow morning.”

Julian nodded slowly, looking down at his polished shoes, which were now scuffed and stained with mud and blood. “You’re right. You shouldn't have been here tonight. None of this was your fault.” He reached into the inner pocket of his ruined suit jacket, pulled out a heavy velvet business card holder, and extracted a handwritten note instead. He pressed it gently into Clara’s unresisting hand. “That’s my personal contact information. The agency short-changed you for tonight’s labor. I’ve transferred full back-pay plus a scholarship tuition stipend directly into the routing number you provided when you were hired.”

Clara looked down at the paper, her breath catching in her throat. The amount listed was enough to cover her entire final year of university without her ever having to work another underground temp job.

“Julian, I can’t take this,” she whispered, pulling her hand back as if the paper were burning her skin.

“Consider it hazard pay for surviving the Vance family demolition derby,” Julian offered with a faint, sad smile. “Please, Clara. Let me do at least one right thing tonight before the sun comes up.”

Clara hesitated, looking from the paper to Julian’s tired eyes. She slowly folded the note and slipped it into the pocket of her beige apron, realizing that pride was a luxury she couldn't afford if she wanted to secure her future.

“Thank you,” she murmured, her voice softening just a fraction. “Good luck with whatever is left of your empire.”

She turned around and finally walked through the iron gates, leaving the luxury mansion, the federal agents, and Julian Vance behind in the dark.

Julian watched her go until she disappeared around the corner of the street. He turned back toward the courtyard, where the federal agents were packing up their equipment and loading an unconscious Marcus into a waiting ambulance.

As Julian walked slowly back toward the grand double doors of the mansion, his phone buzzed violently in his pocket with an unknown international caller ID. He pulled it out, stared at the glowing screen for a long moment, and slowly pressed accept.

“Vance,” Julian answered, his voice hard.

A chilling, distorted laugh echoed through the receiver from the other end of the line, freezing him in his tracks.
