Chapter 5 - Darkness Falls

The sudden pitch-black darkness enveloped the courtyard, broken only by the sweeping red-and-blue emergency beacons of the arriving local police cruisers outside the front gates. In the confusion, the sound of gravel crunching under heavy running boots echoed loudly from the side terrace.
“Security breach!” one of the Sterling & Thorne agents shouted, drawing a service weapon and aiming it toward the shadows near the pool house. “Freeze! Identify yourself!”
Clara stumbled backward in the dark, her shoulder colliding hard with a stone pillar. Her heart raced against her ribs as panic threatened to paralyze her completely. She reached out blindly, her fingers brushing against her dropped backpack on the ground. She needed to get out of the courtyard, away from the federal agents, away from Julian’s collapsing empire, and far away from Vivienne’s insane games.
“Stay down, Clara!” Julian’s voice called out from nearby, followed by the sound of him moving rapidly across the cobblestones. A heavy hand caught her arm, steadying her against the pillar. “Don’t move. Someone is trying to eliminate the digital trail inside.”
“Let go of me!” Clara hissed, wrenching her arm out of his grasp. “I’m done taking orders from you, Mr. Vance! Your entire life is a toxic dumpster fire, and I refuse to burn with it!”
A sudden beam of a tactical flashlight cut through the darkness, illuminating the courtyard in stark white light. The beam swept across the wet patio, catching Vivienne sprinting toward the rear service exit near the kitchens.
“Stop her! She’s heading for the secondary garage!” the lead agent yelled, breaking into a sprint with two of his men hot on her heels.
Julian ignored the chase and kept his flashlight fixed on Clara’s face, his expression desperate and pleading. “Clara, please. The man who set up that shell corporation... it wasn’t me. It was my brother, Marcus. He’s been using my identity for six months.”
Clara stared at him, her eyes wide with shock. “You have a brother?”
“Twin brother,” Julian said bitterly, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “He died in a car accident five years ago—or at least, that’s what my father told me. But evidence I found tonight proves he faked his death to strip the company dry while framing me for financial fraud.”
Before Clara could process the explosive revelation, the beam of another flashlight clicked on directly behind Julian, casting a tall, menacing shadow against the limestone wall.
“Well, well, well,” a cold, unfamiliar voice drawled from the darkness, echoing with an eerie resemblance to Julian’s own tone. “It looks like my loving brother has been sharing family secrets with the hired help.”

Julian spun around instantly, his flashlight beam illuminating a man standing at the edge of the terrace—a man wearing an identical black suit, holding a silver briefcase, and smiling with terrifying familiarity.
