Chapter 4 - The Web Tightens

“I didn’t lie to you about who I am,” Julian said, stepping forward with his hands raised defensively. His voice was laced with urgent sincerity, but the damage was already done. “Clara, listen to me. I didn’t know which agency was supplying the staff tonight. My security team handled the hiring to ensure confidentiality.”

Clara stared at him, her chest rising and falling rapidly. The exhaustion of a twelve-hour workday suddenly hit her like a physical blow. She had spent the entire evening scrubbing floors, carrying heavy pots, and enduring insults from Vivienne, all believing she was just an honest worker earning an honest wage.

“Confidentiality?” Clara’s voice cracked, tears of pure frustration finally threatening to spill over. “You brought me into the middle of a federal investigation under false pretenses! Do you have any idea what this means for me? I have exams tomorrow morning!”

The lead agent from Sterling & Thorne stepped between them, holding up a hand to keep distance. “Miss Hayes, your personal grievances will have to be addressed after we secure the perimeter. Right now, every electronic device on this property is being mirrored by our cyber team.”

Vivienne slowly picked herself up from the gravel, smoothing down her ruined green dress with trembling hands. A manic, hysterical laugh escaped her lips as she looked at Julian and Clara.

“Look at you two,” Vivienne sneered, wiping mud from her cheek. “The betrayed husband and the little pawn caught in the crossfire. You think you’ve won, Julian? You think freezing the accounts solves anything? The real assets aren’t in those offshore accounts. They’re physical, and they’re already out of the country.”

Julian stopped short, his face darkening. “What are you talking about?”

“The diamonds, Julian,” Vivienne purred, stepping closer with a dangerous glint in her green eyes. “Your father’s private collection. The ones you thought were locked in the main vault. They left on a private charter to Geneva three hours ago. By morning, they’ll be untraceable.”

The agent from Sterling & Thorne tapped his earpiece sharply, listening to a whispered report from one of the tech specialists inside the mansion. His expression went from professional cool to absolute alarm.

“Sir,” the agent said, looking directly at Julian. “Our team in the master study just accessed the primary vault. It’s completely empty. Not a single diamond or bearer bond remains.”

Julian staggered backward, the reality of the betrayal crashing over him. He looked at Vivienne, who was smiling with the vindictive triumph of someone who had nothing left to lose.

“You sold them,” Julian whispered. “You traded my family’s entire legacy.”

“I secured my future,” Vivienne corrected smoothly.

Before anyone could react, a piercing alarm began to wail from inside the mansion, and the exterior floodlights flickered twice before dying out entirely, plunging the courtyard into deep, chaotic shadow.
