Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

Water cascaded down the emerald satin dress, soaking the expensive fabric and plastering it against the arrogant frame of Vivienne Vance. The courtyard of the luxury mansion fell dead silent, save for the dripping of soapy water onto the imported cobblestones. Clara stood frozen with a scrubbing brush in her hand, her hair tied in a messy bun, her beige apron soaked at the edges. Julian Vance stood over his wife, his black suit jacket slightly rumpled, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle twitched near his temple.
“The party is over!” Julian yelled, his voice echoing off the limestone walls of the estate. “Pack your things and get out of my house right now!”
Vivienne gasped, her eyes widening in sheer disbelief as red wine mixed with soapy foam dripped from her styled blonde hair. She looked down at her ruined designer gown, then glared up at her husband with venomous fury.
“Are you out of your absolute mind, Julian?” Vivienne shrieked, stepping forward with a trembling hand pointing at his chest. “You destroyed my dress over this pathetic little maid and a dirty pot?”
“She is not just a maid, and you know it!” Julian fired back, his chest heaving with years of accumulated rage and deceit. “Clara is working her fingers to the bone while you host these superficial socialites and bleed our accounts dry. I’ve watched you treat human beings like disposable objects for the last time.”
Clara stepped back, her heart pounding against her ribs. She was just a temporary contract worker brought in through an agency to clean up after the high-society gala. She wanted nothing to do with a bitter divorce or a crumbling dynasty.
“Mr. Vance, please, I just want to finish my shift and get paid,” Clara murmured, her voice trembling slightly in the chill of the night air.
Vivienne whipped her head around, her emerald earrings catching the harsh porch light, and sneered at Clara.
“You stay out of this, you little opportunist,” Vivienne spat. “You planned this. I saw you whispering to him earlier. You think you can ruin my life and take my place?”
Julian grabbed Vivienne by the arm, pulling her back from Clara. “Shut your mouth, Vivienne. Your reign of terror in this house ends tonight. I have the financial audit right here in my briefcase.” Julian reached into his inner jacket pocket, pulled out a thick manila folder, and dropped it right into the puddle of soapy water at Vivienne’s feet.

Vivienne stared down at the wet folder, her face turning pale beneath the makeup, as a single photograph slid out of the envelope, revealing a secret that would destroy them all.
