Chapter 10 - Sirens and Subterfuge

The flashing blue and red lights painted the limestone pillars of the mansion in an eerie, synthetic glow. Four local police cruisers swung through the wrought-iron gates in a tight formation, their tires crunching aggressively over the broken glass and soapy puddles left from earlier in the evening. Officers spilled out with their badges gleaming, hands resting on their holstered sidearms as they assessed the chaos of the wrecked SUV and the injured men on the asphalt.

“Freeze! Nobody move!” a local police captain barked, stepping forward with a stern expression. He scanned the scene—the federal agents in their tactical suits, Julian standing over his bleeding twin, Vivienne sobbing hysterically on the ground, and Clara clutching her backpack near the edge of the road.

The lead agent from Sterling & Thorne stepped forward, flashing a high-security federal badge directly into the captain’s face. “Captain Miller, Federal Asset Recovery Division. This entire estate and all its occupants are currently under federal jurisdiction pursuant to a corporate embezzlement and fraud warrant.”

Captain Miller blinked, looking from the federal badge to Marcus’s unconscious body, and then to Julian. A heavy sigh escaped the captain’s lips as he realized the local precinct had just walked into a hornet's nest far above their pay grade.

“Understood, Agent Vance—Agent Sterling,” the captain corrected himself quickly, lowering his hand. “What do you need us to do?”

“Secure the perimeter, lock down all exits, and ensure no digital data leaves this property,” the lead agent instructed crisply. He then turned his steely gaze toward Clara, who was slowly inching her way backward toward the pedestrian gate. “And detain Miss Hayes for questioning regarding her association with the Vance family.”

Clara’s heart dropped into her stomach. She stopped moving, her blood running cold. “Detain me? Are you out of your mind? I’m just a temp worker! I have nothing to do with their crimes!”

“You were found on private property during an active federal raid, Miss Hayes, using an employment agency tied directly to a fraudulent shell corporation,” the agent replied without a trace of emotion. “You aren’t under arrest, but you are not leaving until our digital forensic analysts verify every text message, email, and phone call on your device.”

Julian stood up from his brother’s side, wiping blood from his hands onto his ruined suit trousers. He stepped between the federal agent and Clara, his expression fierce and protective.

“Leave her out of this,” Julian demanded, his voice echoing in the chilly night air. “Clara was hired through an open agency contract this afternoon. She didn’t know anything about Marcus, she didn’t know about the shell company, and she certainly didn’t steal the diamonds.”

Vivienne let out a harsh, bitter laugh from where she sat on the gravel, wiping her smeared mascara with a trembling hand. “Oh, look at the noble knight defending his little maid,” she sneered. “You always did have a soft spot for charity cases, Julian. Too bad she’s probably the one who smuggled the flash drive out of the study.”

Clara stared at Vivienne in absolute disbelief, anger suddenly flaring hot and bright in her chest, burning away her fear. She stepped forward, ignoring the federal agents, and glared down at the arrogant woman.

“I have worked twelve grueling hours tonight cleaning up your messes, enduring your insults, and dodging your psychotic family drama,” Clara said, her voice shaking with righteous fury. “If you accuse me of one more lie, I swear I will tell these officers everything I overheard in that study about your offshore accounts in Zurich.”
