Chapter 6

Inside Room 412 of St. Jude’s Hospital, the morning light filtered softly through the vertical blinds, casting warm stripes across the clean white sheets. Natalie lay propped up against a stack of pillows, a saline drip quietly ticking away beside her bed. The harsh fluorescent lights of the previous night had been dimmed, allowing the room to feel peaceful, almost serene. Arthur sat in a vinyl armchair beside the bed, his light blue button-down shirt wrinkled from a sleepless night, holding a warm cup of black coffee he hadn't touched in hours.

The television mounted softly in the corner hummed with a local morning news broadcast, but neither of them was paying attention to it. Natalie’s breathing was noticeably deeper and more relaxed than it had been on the patio. The dark bruising under her eyes still lingered, but the sheer terror that had defined her expression for months had finally begun to recede, replaced by a quiet, fragile stillness.

"Detective Miller called ten minutes ago," Arthur said quietly, setting his coffee cup down on the bedside table. "The arrest warrant was executed just after sunrise. Beatrice is in holding downtown."

Natalie looked out the window, watching the distant treetops sway gently in the breeze. She didn't smile, nor did she express triumphant joy; her reaction was one of profound, exhausted release. "She really thought she was untouchable," Natalie whispered, her voice stronger than it had been the day before. "She managed everything with such absolute confidence. Every time I tried to call you, she intercepted the lines. She told me you had stopped caring, that you had started a new life overseas and wanted nothing more to do with me."

Arthur felt a sharp pang of remorse cut through him again. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, and clasped his hands tightly together. "I should have called more often. I should have flown home unannounced instead of trusting her updates. I let myself get buried in the contracts, thinking that providing financially was enough to keep you safe."

"You didn't know, Arthur," Natalie said softly, turning her head on the pillow to meet his eyes. Her thin, bruised hand reached out across the sheets, her fingers gently touching the back of his hand. "Beatrice is a master of manipulation. She played the devoted caregiver to perfection whenever anyone from the outside looked in. You saved me just in time. If you had waited another week..." She didn't finish the sentence, but the heavy silence filled in the devastating blank.

"We don't have to think about what-ifs anymore," Arthur promised, turning his hand over to interlock his fingers with hers. "The medical team is starting the targeted therapy protocol this afternoon. The legal team is securing every remaining asset in your name. We are going to take back everything she stole, and more importantly, you are going to heal."
