Chapter 13

Two weeks after the verdict, the estate on the hill was swarming with prospective buyers, appraisers, and auctioneers. The opulent white columns of the patio, once a backdrop for cruelty and deceit, now served as the staging ground for the court-ordered liquidation of Beatrice’s ill-gotten assets. Luxury vehicles, antique furniture, imported rugs, and valuable artwork were tagged with yellow auction lots, destined to be sold to the highest bidder to satisfy the restitution order.

Arthur and Natalie stood near the edge of the property boundary, well away from the bustling crowd of curious onlookers and aggressive bidders. Natalie wore a comfortable linen dress and a wide-brimmed sunhat, her natural dark hair now growing in evenly across her scalp like a soft velvet shadow. She leaned lightly on Arthur’s arm as they watched the dismantling of the mansion that had once held her hostage.

"Do you feel any regret seeing it all taken apart?" Arthur asked quietly, glancing down at her with deep affection.

"None at all," Natalie replied without hesitation, a peaceful smile gracing her lips. "That house was never a home, Arthur. It was a prison built with stolen funds and hidden intentions. Watching it get auctioned off feels like watching the last shadows fade away."

Sarah Chen, the senior litigation partner, walked over from the main entrance holding a thick leather portfolio. Her expression was bright and triumphant. "Just received confirmation from the court receiver," Sarah announced, handing a summary document to Arthur. "The auction proceeds, combined with the frozen offshore accounts, completely cover all of Natalie’s ongoing medical expenses, legal fees, and full financial restitution. The estate is officially sold, and the title has been cleared."

"Thank you, Sarah," Arthur said, shaking her hand firmly. "For everything. You didn't just win a legal case; you helped restore a life."

"It was my honor," Sarah replied, smiling warmly at Natalie. "Take care of yourself, Mrs. Vance. You've earned every bit of peace coming your way."

As Sarah walked back toward the main house to finalize the paperwork, Arthur and Natalie turned their backs on the estate for the very last time. They walked slowly toward the waiting vehicle parked down the lane, leaving the marble columns, the crystalline pool, and the ghosts of the past far behind them. The sun overhead was warm and bright, casting long, golden light across the open road ahead—a road that belonged entirely to them.
