Chapter 12

The jury deliberated for a remarkably short duration—just under two hours—before signaling that they had reached a unanimous verdict. By mid-afternoon, Courtroom 3B was once again filled to capacity, the heavy air thick with anticipation. Arthur and Natalie sat side by side in the front row, their fingers intertwined, maintaining a calm, grounded composure. Across the aisle, Beatrice sat rigidly, her face pale, her eyes darting nervously between the judge’s bench and her defense counsel.
The judge entered the courtroom, the bailiff calling everyone to stand before signaling them to sit. Judge Thomas, a veteran jurist with silver hair and a stern expression, adjusted his glasses as he looked down at the official document handed to him by the foreman.
"In the matter of the State versus Beatrice Vance, on all counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, identity theft, and the felony endangerment of a vulnerable adult, how does the jury find?" Judge Thomas read aloud.
"We find the defendant, Beatrice Vance, guilty on all counts," the foreman replied clearly.
A sharp intake of breath echoed from the defense table. Beatrice slumped backward in her chair, the last vestige of her calculated composure completely shattering. Her elaborate network of lies, shell companies, and psychological manipulation had finally collapsed under the unyielding weight of the digital and medical evidence Arthur and his legal team had assembled.
Judge Thomas looked down sternly at the defense table before addressing the court. "The severity of these crimes—involving the deliberate medical neglect and financial exploitation of a vulnerable person for personal enrichment—demands the maximum statutory penalty. Sentencing will take place in thirty days, but given the immediate flight risk and the nature of the offenses, the defendant’s bail is revoked effective immediately. Bailiffs, take her into custody."
Two uniformed bailiffs stepped forward instantly, placing their hands firmly on Beatrice’s shoulders. She didn't scream or thrash—her reactions were completely devoid of the dramatic flair she had displayed on the patio weeks ago. Instead, she stared straight ahead with a hollow, defeated expression as the steel cuffs were locked around her wrists, and she was led away through the secure side door of the courtroom.
Arthur let out a long, steady breath, the tension that had gripped his shoulders for months finally releasing its hold. He turned to Natalie, pulling her close against his side. She rested her head gently against his shoulder, a profound sense of closure washing over her features. The nightmare was over. The predator who had sought to consume her life from the shadows had been permanently stripped of her power.
"It’s finished," Arthur whispered softly, kissing the top of her head.

"No," Natalie corrected gently, looking up at him with clear, bright eyes. "It’s just beginning."
