Chapter 1

The Mediterranean sun beat down mercilessly against the stark white marble columns of the patio, offering no warmth to the cold reality unfolding by the crystalline pool. Arthur knelt on the scorching stones, his light blue button-down shirt clinging to his shoulders, sweat mingling with the quiet agony carved deep into his dark-haired features. His hands, usually steady and precise, trembled as they cradled Natalie’s face. She was heartbreakingly frail, her oversized beige dress hanging loosely over a skeletal frame, a soft scarf wrapped around her completely bald head. Every breath she took sounded like dry paper rubbing together.

"Natalie... what did they do to you?" Arthur whispered, his voice cracking with a raw, shattered grief that felt entirely out of place in the opulent, manicured courtyard of the estate he had spent the last two years funding from across an ocean.

Natalie looked up slowly, her eyelids bruised a deep, mottled purple, her eyes swimming with a mixture of profound exhaustion and lingering terror. Her lips were dry and cracked, parting with visible effort as she met his tormented gaze.

"They wouldn't pay for the biopsy," she murmured weakly, her voice barely carrying over the distant hum of the pool’s filtration system. "I had to sell my hair."

The words struck Arthur like a physical blow, freezing the blood in his veins. He stared at her, struggling to bridge the impossible chasm between the generous wire transfers he had faithfully sent home month after month and the horrifying destitution wasting away the woman he loved. Before he could speak, a sharp, piercing sound cut through the heavy air from the elevated veranda behind them.

Beatrice, draped in an immaculate white silk robe, stood rigidly at the top of the stone steps. Her blonde hair was pulled into a severe chignon, her face twisted into a mask of cold, defensive malice. She pointed a manicured finger directly at Natalie, her voice rising in a shrill, venomous bark that echoed off the marble pillars.

"Do not let her manipulate you!" Beatrice shouted, her tone dripping with manufactured outrage. "She did that for attention!"

Arthur’s head snapped up, the grief in his eyes instantly calcifying into a terrifying, incandescent rage. His jaw locked, and the muscles in his neck strained as he looked up at the woman who had sworn to care for Natalie while he was away on urgent business.

"You spent every dime I sent and left her to die!" Arthur shouted back, his voice sharp enough to draw blood.

May you like

Without waiting for a response, Arthur pulled Natalie against his chest, burying his face into the soft scarf covering her head as silent, heavy tears finally broke free. "Tomorrow," he whispered fiercely against her ear, "they lose everything."
