Chapter 4

Midnight descended upon the city like a suffocating shroud, but inside the cramped study of Arthur’s temporary apartment, the room glowed with the cold, blue light of dual monitors. Rows of encrypted financial spreadsheets, bank wire confirmations, and offshore routing numbers scrolled endlessly across the screens. Arthur sat hunched over the keyboard, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, his dark hair disheveled from hours of unremitting focus. Across the room, a secure encrypted phone buzzed softly against the wooden desk.
He picked up the receiver on the third ring. "Talk to me," Arthur said without preamble.
"We’re looking at the primary offshore accounts now, Mr. Vance," a synthesized, professional voice responded through the encrypted line. "The wire transfers you initiated from your overseas holdings didn't just sit in the household management account. Within forty-eight hours of hitting the local bank, they were systematically funneled into a secondary shell company registered under an LLC named Horizon Holdings. The sole beneficial owner of Horizon Holdings is Beatrice Vance."
Arthur’s fingers paused over the mechanical keyboard. A cold smile touched the corners of his mouth—not one of amusement, but of grim, chilling validation. "And the signature on the incorporation documents?"
"Electronic signature utilizing Natalie Vance’s biometric credentials, but our forensic logs show the IP address originated from the guest house on the estate while Natalie was incapacitated in the primary bedroom. It’s an open-and-shut case of wire fraud and identity theft."
"Send the complete data packet directly to Detective Miller at the Financial Crimes Division," Arthur instructed, his voice low and deliberate. "Include the medical refusal notices from the oncology clinic alongside the bank records. Make sure the timeline proves premeditation. I want her arrested before she has a chance to liquidate the remaining physical assets."
"Understood. The packet will be on his desk by 6:00 AM."
Arthur disconnected the call and leaned back into his ergonomic chair, letting out a long, slow breath. The physical exhaustion weighing on his bones was entirely overshadowed by a relentless, burning focus. For months, he had lived with the agonizing belief that his absence was the cause of his distance from Natalie. Now, he understood the truth: he had been deliberately blinded by a campaign of psychological and financial isolation orchestrated by a woman who viewed human life as nothing more than a ledger item to be balanced in her favor.

He glanced toward the bedroom door, listening quietly for the soft, steady rhythm of Natalie’s breathing drifting down the hallway from the makeshift resting area he had set up. She was safe tonight. For the first time in over a year, she was under the care of real physicians, free from the toxic environment of the estate. But the battle was far from over. Beatrice was not the type of person to go down quietly. She possessed social standing, influential local connections, and a desperation born of absolute greed. Tomorrow morning would bring a storm, and Arthur intended to make sure it swept away every trace of the corruption that had nearly cost Natalie her life.
