Chapter 10

The following week at St. Jude’s Hospital marked a steady, undeniable turning point in Natalie’s recovery. The targeted oncology protocol had begun to yield positive indicators, and her blood counts were slowly stabilizing under the watchful care of Dr. Vance and his specialized nursing staff. Arthur spent every waking hour by her side, transforming the sterile hospital room into a makeshift office where he managed both his international business affairs and the impending liquidation of the fraudulent estate.

Natalie sat up comfortably in her bed, reading through a stack of architectural blueprints and interior design portfolios Arthur had brought in earlier that morning. Her knit cap had been removed, and the first soft fuzz of dark hair was beginning to timidly return across her scalp. The bruises around her eyes had completely faded, leaving behind a complexion that, while still pale, held the warmth of returning health.

"What are all these for?" Natalie asked, looking up from a modern, light-filled suburban townhouse design with a sprawling garden patio.

Arthur looked up from his laptop, closing the screen with a soft click. He pulled his chair closer to her bedside, a gentle, genuine smile touching his lips. "We’re selling the estate the moment the court clears the title. Every brick of that place holds too many terrible memories. I found a quiet property closer to the coast—one level, accessible, surrounded by trees and absolute peace. No grand marble columns, no hidden guest suites, just a real home."

Natalie traced her fingers along the edge of the architectural rendering, her eyes shining with unshed tears of relief. "You don't have to carry all of this, Arthur. You’ve already done so much."

"It’s not a burden, Natalie. It’s a correction," Arthur said softly, reaching out to take her hand. "I spent two years away believing I was building a future for us, but I forgot that a future isn't measured in bank accounts or wire transfers. It’s measured in presence. In being here, in the quiet moments, holding your hand when things fall apart."

"Beatrice thought money was the only power that mattered," Natalie murmured, her voice steady and clear. "She thought that because she controlled the purse strings, she controlled our lives. She never understood that love doesn't require a gilded cage."

"And she paid the ultimate price for that misunderstanding," Arthur replied firmly. "The prosecutors are moving forward with a multi-count indictment that includes aggravated financial exploitation and reckless endangerment. Her lawyers tried to negotiate a plea deal for lesser charges, but the District Attorney rejected it outright based on the medical evidence we provided."

Natalie let out a long, slow breath, leaning her head back against the pillows. The tension that had defined her posture for over a year finally melted away entirely. "I want to testify," she said quietly, meeting his gaze with unwavering resolve. "Not out of anger, and not for revenge. I want to stand in that courtroom so that she has to look me in the eye and see that she didn't destroy me."
