The Midnight Audit / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5

The first amber rays of sunlight broke over the manicured hedges of the estate, casting long, dramatic shadows across the pristine white columns of the patio. Inside the master study upstairs, Beatrice paced back and forth across the imported Persian rug, her white silk robe clutched tightly around her trembling frame. Her phone was pressed hard against her ear, her voice rising in a frantic, demanding pitch that betrayed the panic she had spent all night trying to suppress.

"I don't care about the quarterly audit, Harold! I need those asset transfers frozen before the bank opens!" Beatrice snapped, stopping abruptly by the floor-to-ceiling window that overlooked the empty pool.

Before the voice on the other end could reply, a sharp, collective pounding echoed from the front entrance below. It wasn't the polite knock of a morning delivery driver or a housekeeper; it was the heavy, rhythmic thud of official boots against solid oak. Beatrice froze, the phone slipping slightly in her sweaty palm. She hurried out to the second-floor landing, leaning over the wrought-iron railing to peer down into the grand foyer below.

Two uniformed police officers stood inside the entryway, flanked by Detective Miller—a tall, sharp-eyed man in a charcoal suit holding a thick manila folder. The heavy front door stood wide open, letting in the cool, crisp morning air.

"Beatrice Vance?" Detective Miller called out, his voice echoing cleanly through the cavernous space. "Step down here, please. We have a warrant to search the premises and an arrest warrant issued by the District Attorney's office."

"This is an outrage!" Beatrice shrieked, her voice cracking as she descended the grand staircase with as much misplaced dignity as she could muster. "You have no right to barge into my home! My husband—my family—will have your badge by noon!"

"Your husband is currently at St. Jude’s Hospital by his wife’s bedside, Mrs. Vance," Detective Miller replied calmly, opening the manila folder and stepping forward. "And the primary residence you’re standing in was purchased using embezzled funds tied directly to fraudulent medical withholdings. You’re being charged with wire fraud, grand larceny, and the deliberate endangerment of a vulnerable adult."

Beatrice’s face drained of all color, her blonde chignon suddenly looking severe and stark against her pale skin. She opened her mouth to argue, but the words caught in her throat. Detective Miller stepped closer, signaling the officers to move past her toward the office.

"You can make your statement down at the station," Miller said, pulling out a pair of steel cuffs that gleamed coldly in the morning light. "And I’d advise you to call a very good criminal defense attorney. The digital paper trail your accountant set up leads straight to your personal offshore accounts."
