Chapter 6 - The Descent into the Underground

The pneumatic stun baton hissed aggressively as Arthur lunged forward, closing the distance between them with surprising speed for a man who had been pinned to the floor minutes earlier. Julian pivoted smoothly on his heel, using his momentum to deflect the blow harmlessly off his heavy suit sleeve while delivering a sharp, defensive kick to Arthur’s knee joint. Arthur crumpled with a sharp cry of pain, tumbling down the first three concrete steps of the dark subterranean stairwell before collapsing against the rusted iron handrail.
"Don't look back, Leo. Keep moving," Julian commanded softly, guiding his bewildered son down the damp, echoing steps away from the street level.
The subterranean rail station was eerily quiet, illuminated only by the dull red glow of emergency exit signs reflecting off puddles of stagnant water on the platform. The air smelled of ozone, old concrete, and the faint metallic tang of heavy machinery. In the distance, the low rumble of an incoming commuter train vibrated through the floorboards, offering their only viable means of escape from the district.
As they reached the edge of the platform, the silver key in Julian's pocket began to vibrate rhythmically against his thigh, emitting a faint, high-pitched electronic chime. Julian pulled it out; the corporate logo on the metal head was now glowing with a brilliant blue LED light, pointing directly toward an unmarked maintenance door at the far end of the tracks.

Leo shivered in the damp chill, hugging the newborn tighter. "Dad, the baby's waking up. She's crying."
