Chapter 1 - The Broken Promise

Julian stood over the man in the white shirt, whose name tag read Arthur, his chest heaving with restrained fury. Arthur blinked rapidly against the harsh hotel lights, paralyzed by the sudden violence that had just shattered the sterile lobby atmosphere. Julian’s dark grey suit felt tight across his broad shoulders, a stark reminder of the corporate armor he wore to protect his family. Leo, his seven-year-old son, clutched the newborn baby tighter in the back of the idling black SUV, his small knuckles white with residual fear. The stylish couple in beige suits had frozen near the revolving glass doors, their expressions shifting from polite indifference to absolute panic as security guards began shouting across the marble floor.
"You heard my question, Arthur," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave into a dangerous, controlled whisper that cut through the mounting chaos of the terminal. "What is the real reason you did that to those two children?"
Arthur swallowed hard, his throat dry, his fingers twitching against the polished tiles where he lay flat. "I only followed protocol, Mr. Vance," Arthur stammered, his eyes darting toward the retreating figures of the beige-suited couple by the entrance. "The automated system flagged the boy's metabolic variance. It wasn't my decision. It was the biometric audit."
Julian didn't blink. He crouched slightly, his athletic frame coiled like a spring, refusing to accept the bureaucratic excuse. "Protocol doesn't involve locking a seven-year-old and an infant in a quarantine cell for twelve hours without water just because the boy said he was hungry. You bypassed the medical override. Why?"

Arthur’s pupils dilated as he looked up into Julian’s unyielding gaze, realizing the lie had failed. "Because they aren't who your paperwork claims they are," Arthur whispered, just as a security taser clicked to life behind Julian's right shoulder.
