Chapter 13 - An Unexpected Ally

The rear door of the sleek black sedan revealed a familiar figure sitting calmly in the leather interior—it was Arthur, but without his uniform, wearing a civilian trench coat and holding a encrypted tablet that displayed a clean schematic of the entire Vanguard network. Arthur didn't look like an enemy anymore; his expression was weary, resigned, and tinged with a strange kind of redemption.

"Get in, Julian," Arthur said quietly, sliding over to make room for Leo and the children on the wide back seat. "If you stay in this district for another five minutes, Vanguard's recovery squads will sweep this entire neighborhood."

Julian hesitated for a fraction of a second, his instincts screaming caution, but looking at Leo's exhausted face and feeling the steady, warm breathing of the newborn, he climbed into the vehicle and pulled the door shut behind him. The car accelerated smoothly into the midday traffic, merging seamlessly with the anonymous flow of city life.

"Why help us now, Arthur?" Julian asked, his voice guarded as he adjusted his torn grey suit jacket, watching the skyline recede in the rearview mirror.

Arthur tapped the screen of his tablet, displaying a master decryption key that bypassed every security firewall Vanguard owned. "Because I saw what they did to my own niece in the Berlin facility five years ago," Arthur said softly, not looking up. "The board thinks they own human life, Julian. But you have the one thing they can't replicate—the original genetic lineage uncorrupted."
