Chapter 14 - The Final Firewall

The sedan sped along the coastal highway, the bright afternoon sun glinting off the ocean waves as they left the urban sprawl behind for the quiet cliffs of the northern peninsula. Julian sat in silence, holding the silver key—now pulsing with a steady, soothing green light—while Leo finally drifted off to sleep with his head resting comfortably on Julian's lap. The newborn rested peacefully against Arthur's coat, sleeping as if the terrifying ordeal of the past twenty-four hours had never occurred.

"Where are we taking them, Arthur?" Julian asked, breaking the long silence as the car turned down a private, tree-lined gravel driveway leading toward an isolated cliffside safehouse overlooking the sea.

"To the federal oversight committee," Arthur replied, pressing a button on his encrypted tablet to transmit the entire master decryption file to a secure government receiver in Washington. "The encryption you downloaded from the subterranean vault contains every illegal experiment Vanguard conducted over the past decade. By the time the sun sets tonight, their board will be under federal arrest."

Julian felt a profound sense of relief wash over him, a heavy weight lifting from his broad shoulders for the first time in months. He looked out the window as the safehouse came into view, its lights glowing warmly against the twilight horizon.
