Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Lobby

The sharp click of the taser safety disengaging echoed off the vaulted ceiling of the grand hotel lobby, freezing the frantic movement around them. Julian didn't turn around; his eyes remained locked on Arthur, who was now trembling visibly against the cold marble. The stylish couple in the beige suits had retreated entirely into the shadows of the oversized mahogany pillars, whispering urgently into encrypted earpieces while pretending to admire a decorative floral arrangement. Julian knew time was running out before the real corporate security teams arrived to sanitize the scene and sweep the incident under the rug.

"Drop your hands, sir, step away from the employee," the head security guard barked, his voice amplified by the cavernous acoustics of the room.

Julian slowly straightened up, his tall frame imposing even against the armed guard. He adjusted the cuffs of his grey shirt with deliberate slowness, projecting an aura of cold authority that made the guard hesitate for a fraction of a second. "You might want to check Arthur's personal terminal before you make a career-ending mistake," Julian said calmly, gesturing toward the fallen man's discarded tablet. "He didn't just detain my children. He uploaded their encrypted biometric signatures to an unauthorized third-party server."

Arthur gasped, pushing himself up onto his elbows, his face draining of what little color remained. "He’s bluffing! He's trying to distract you!" Arthur shouted, scrambling backward across the floor.

Julian ignored him and walked briskly back toward the black SUV where Leo was pressing his small face against the tinted glass. Julian opened the rear door, gently taking the newborn from his son's shaking arms, feeling the fragile, steady heartbeat against his chest. Leo looked up with wide, trusting eyes, whispering words that made Julian's blood run cold.
