Chapter 3 - The Silver Key

Julian slid into the leather interior of the SUV, shielding the newborn with his broad chest while his fingers searched the creak of the back seat. His hand brushed against a cold, metallic object—a heavy silver key stamped with a deeply etched corporate logo he recognized instantly. It was the insignia of Vanguard Bio-Research, the secretive genetics facility where Julian had served as lead ethical compliance officer until his sudden resignation three months ago. The puzzle pieces clicked together with terrifying clarity, revealing a conspiracy far deeper than a simple airport detention error.

Leo tugged gently at Julian's dark grey suit sleeve. "Are we going back to that bad room, Dad? The lights wouldn't turn off, and the lady outside kept saying we didn't exist."

Julian pulled his son into a tight, reassuring embrace, burying his face in the boy's soft hair to hide his own rising panic. "Nobody is ever putting you in a room like that again, Leo. I promise you." He looked up through the windshield to see the stylish couple in beige suits slipping out through a side service exit, clutching a black leather briefcase that looked suspiciously heavy.

The black SUV's internal communication screen suddenly flickered to life, glowing with an amber light that indicated an encrypted direct feed. A synthesized female voice filled the cabin, devoid of any human warmth or hesitation. "Mr. Vance, relinquish the children and the key at the service gate within three minutes, or the genetic stabilization sequence for the infant will be remotely terminated."

Julian stared at the screen, his breath catching in his throat as the vehicle's doors automatically locked with a heavy, mechanical thud.
