Chapter 8 - The Ghost Transfer

The digital numbers on Julian’s smartphone screen glowed mockingly in the dim, chaotic light of the police-invaded living room. Four point five million dollars. Gone. Siphoned out of the children’s charity endowment fund and routed through a dozen offshore shell companies before the officers had even breached the front door.
“How?” Julian whispered, his thumb trembling as he scrolled through the transaction details. “The system was locked down. The encryption keys were with the board.”
Eleanor laughed softly as two officers guided her toward the shattered front door.
“You always trusted the system, Julian, but you forgot who built the architecture,” Eleanor called back over her shoulder just before stepping out onto the porch. “The transfer didn’t need your encryption. It ran on an automated trigger set to fire the moment my phone lost connection to the house’s local network.”
Julian stood up slowly, clutching his phone like a lifeline, while Sophia stayed close behind him, holding onto the hem of his black tuxedo jacket.
“Sir, we need you to step outside while we secure the scene and take your statement,” the lead detective instructed gently, placing a reassuring hand on Julian’s shoulder.
Julian nodded numbly, guiding Sophia out past the white picket fence where a crowd of curious neighbors had gathered behind police yellow tape. The bright afternoon sun beat down mercilessly, contrasting sharply with the cold dread settling deep inside Julian’s chest. The police had Eleanor and Arthur in custody, but the stolen funds were already halfway across the globe, untraceable and irrecoverable by normal legal means.
As they reached the sidewalk beside the white picket fence where this entire nightmare had begun just twenty minutes earlier, a sleek black sedan pulled up quietly to the curb. The tinted window rolled down an inch, revealing a pair of dark sunglasses reflecting the flashing red lights.
“Julian,” a deep, unfamiliar voice spoke from inside the idling car. “Get in. We need to talk about your daughter’s safe return.”
Julian froze, stepping protectively in front of Sophia.
“I already called the police, you bastards!” Julian yelled toward the vehicle.

The car door clicked open, and a man in a tailored grey suit stepped out onto the concrete, holding up a familiar golden locket that belonged to Sophia.
