Chapter 3 - Shadows on the Pavement

The heavy silence of the suburban neighborhood was suddenly disrupted by the low, menacing rumble of an idling engine. Julian flicked his gaze toward the street. Parked beneath the shade of a sprawling oak tree was a dark sedan, its tinted windows hiding whoever sat inside. The revelation hit Julian with staggering force; Eleanor wasn’t acting alone. There was an entire network involved in the embezzlement scheme, and they were watching every move he made.

“You’re ruining your own life, Eleanor,” Julian said, struggling to keep his voice steady while his heart hammered against his ribs. “When the police trace those accounts—and they are tracing them right now—you won’t have anywhere to run.”

“Let them try,” Arthur spoke for the first time, his voice raspy and laced with a dangerous edge. He tightened his grip on Sophia, who let out another muffled cry of pain. “The police are already looking in the wrong county. By the time they figure out where we went, we’ll be across the border.”

Julian stared at the white bandage on Arthur’s arm. The fabric was stained with a faint circle of old blood, suggesting a recent injury—perhaps from a struggle during Sophia’s abduction.

“You’re bleeding, Arthur,” Julian noted quietly, stalling for time while his mind raced through tactical options. “Whoever hurt your arm isn’t going to protect you when things go south. They’ll drop you the second you become dead weight.”

Arthur flinched microscopically, his eyes darting toward Eleanor. The psychological wedge Julian drove between the two kidnappers caused a subtle shift in the room's dynamic. Eleanor shot Arthur a sharp, warning glare, sensing the erosion of their fragile alliance.

“Shut your mouth, Julian, or I swear I’ll pull the trigger right now,” Arthur hissed, his hand trembling slightly as he pressed the gun harder against Sophia’s temple.

“Dad, don’t listen to them!” Sophia managed to yelp as Arthur momentarily loosened his grip.

Without warning, the front door’s smart lock blinked from red to green with a loud, electronic click, swinging inward on its own accord.
