Chapter 4 - The Open Door Trap

The heavy wooden front door drifted slowly inward, held back only by the glass storm door that separated Julian from his daughter. The electronic lock had clicked open, but the gesture felt less like an invitation and more like the snapping jaws of a trap. Julian’s polished black dress shoes stepped over the threshold, his black tuxedo brushing against the white doorframe.
“Step back, Julian,” Eleanor commanded, her hand resting delicately on a small mahogany side table where a heavy brass figurine sat within arm’s reach. “Don’t test us.”
“I’m inside now. Let Sophia walk out,” Julian demanded, refusing to move another inch forward. He kept his eyes locked on Arthur, noting how the young man’s weight was shifted heavily onto his left foot, favoring his injured right side beneath the white bandage.
“Nobody is walking anywhere until we have the briefcase from your office,” Eleanor said, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper. “You thought you could outsmart us by hiding the physical ledgers in the charity’s vault, but we know you carry the encrypted backup everywhere you go. In the silver-plated cufflink case.”
Julian instinctively touched his left wrist. The heavy silver cufflinks engraved with his family crest did indeed house a micro-SD card containing every decrypted file, wire transfer receipt, and offshore account number linked to Eleanor’s illegal operation. He had forgotten he was wearing them today.
“You’re not getting the files,” Julian said coldly, his fear hardening into resolute determination. “Even if you kill me, the system is automated. Those files upload to federal investigators automatically at midnight if I don’t input the override code.”
Arthur’s face drained of color. He looked down at Eleanor in sheer panic.
“Is that true? You said this was a clean grab and go!” Arthur shouted, his grip on the gun faltering for a split second.
“He’s lying!” Eleanor shrieked, her composed facade finally cracking under the pressure. “Julian is a coward; he doesn’t have the stomach for a federal dead-man’s switch!”

Seizing the micro-second of distraction, Sophia drove her heel down hard onto Arthur’s polished leather shoe.
