Chapter 6 - The Empty Shell

The golden light streaming through the suburban living room window caught the polished surface of the silver cufflink case, highlighting its utter emptiness. Eleanor’s triumphant smile dissolved instantly into a mask of furious disbelief. She held the metal shell upside down, shaking it violently, but nothing fell out except a tiny speck of dust.
“Where is it?” Eleanor shrieked, stepping directly into Julian’s personal space and shoving the empty case against his chest. “You had it on you! I saw the imprint on your cuff!”
Julian allowed a cold, humorless smile to touch the corners of his mouth. The adrenaline was pumping through his veins now, sharpening his focus.
“You really thought I’d walk into a public charity event wearing the single most incriminating piece of evidence on my sleeve?” Julian mocked quietly. “You underestimate me, Eleanor. You always have.”
Arthur, still pointing the heavy revolver at Julian’s chest with his trembling left hand, looked frantically between Eleanor and Julian, his panic boiling over.
“She’s lying to us! They’re playing us!” Arthur yelled, his voice cracking. “We need to cut our losses and run right now before the cops show up!”
“Shut up, Arthur!” Eleanor snarled, turning on him with venomous rage. “He’s bluffing! He has nowhere else to hide it! Search him!”
Before Arthur could step forward to pat Julian down, a loud, insistent knocking echoed from the front door.
“Police department! Open up!” a gruff voice commanded from the porch.
The sound paralyzed everyone in the room. Sophia lifted her head, her pale face lighting up with a flicker of hope. Arthur froze, the revolver wavering in his grip as terror washed over his features. Eleanor’s eyes darted wildly toward the back window that led to the overgrown backyard.
“You called them,” Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling with rage as she glared at Julian.
“I didn’t have to,” Julian replied calmly, standing his ground. “A neighbor saw you dragging Sophia inside. Good citizens still look out for each other in this neighborhood.”

The front door shook violently under the heavy strike of a police battering ram, splintering the frame around the electronic lock.
