Chapter 15 - The Dawn of Reckoning

Julian’s right pinky finger pressed down hard on the enter key just as Arthur lunged forward with the hunting knife raised high.

BEEP.

A deafening alarm echoed through the underground server room as the master terminal flashed a brilliant, blinding crimson.

“Root authentication override executed. All network nodes broadcasting to federal receivers,” an automated synthetic voice announced through the basement speakers.

Arthur screamed in rage, stumbling backward as the bright red light bathed the entire room.

“What did you do?!” Arthur roared, slashing blindly with the knife.

Julian ducked beneath the wild swing, surging upward with his full body weight and ramming his shoulder directly into Arthur’s injured right arm. Arthur let out an agonizing shriek as the impact jarred his wounded shoulder, causing the hunting knife to fly from his grip and clatter harmlessly across the concrete floor.

Before Arthur could recover his balance, Julian followed up with a sharp right hook, catching Arthur squarely on the jaw and sending him crashing hard against the server rack. Sparks showered down as the metal unit groaned under the impact, and Arthur slid down unconscious to the floor.

Julian stood panting heavily, adjusting his bloodstained black tuxedo jacket, wiping sweat and dust from his forehead.

“Dad!” Sophia cried out, scrambling out from behind the desk and throwing her arms around his waist.

“It’s over, sweetie. It’s finally over,” Julian whispered, holding her tight while the computer monitors above them scrolled through endless lines of federal data transfers, transmitting every illicit file straight to the Department of Justice.

Above ground, the heavy thud of multiple boots echoed down the basement stairs, followed by the familiar flash of tactical badges. But this time, it wasn't the corrupt local cops—it was federal agents in full gear, securing the perimeter and descending into the bunker with weapons lowered and federal IDs held high.

“Julian Vance? Step away from the console with your hands visible!” the lead federal investigator commanded, though his tone held no malice, only professional exhaustion.

Julian slowly raised his hands, stepping back while keeping one protective arm wrapped around Sophia’s shoulders. He looked down at his polished black dress shoes, now scuffed, stained with dirt and glass, and splattered with the grit of a long afternoon. The white picket fence outside was still standing under the bright suburban sun, framing a world that would never be the same again. But as he looked down into his daughter's bright, tear-free blue eyes, Julian knew that the dark shadows behind the glass were finally gone for good.
