Chapter 13 - The Underground Vault

The hum of the subterranean server rack vibrated through the concrete floor as Julian carried Sophia down the dark basement stairs. The air down here was cold and dry, smelling of ozone and heated electronics. Rows of heavy-duty hard drives blinked with steady emerald pulses, illuminating the damp concrete walls and a large oak desk covered in monitors.
“Sit here, sweetie,” Julian said gently, lowering Sophia onto an old leather office chair situated beside the desk.
He grabbed a spare woolen blanket draped over a sofa in the corner and wrapped it around her shoulders to ward off the chill.
“What is this place, Dad?” Sophia asked, her wide blue eyes reflecting the flickering green lights from the server towers.
“It’s an insurance policy,” Julian muttered, slipping behind the oak desk and waking the primary terminal with a keystroke.
Julian’s fingers flew across the keyboard. He didn’t need the decoy codes anymore; down here, plugged directly into the dark-fiber backbone of the financial network Eleanor had hijacked, he had access to the master ledger. Marcus Sterling had thought he was clever, but Julian had built this entire infrastructure before bringing Eleanor onto the board.
A password prompt appeared on the central monitor: Enter Master Sequence.
Julian paused, his fingers hovering over the plastic keys. If he entered his primary administrative key, every single transaction Eleanor had run over the past five years would be instantly unmasked, broadcasting the names of politicians, corporate executives, and syndicate bosses directly to federal servers.
It would completely clear his name, save the charity, and bring down the entire corrupt network once and for all.
It would also paint an enormous target on his back for the rest of his natural life.
“Dad, someone’s coming down the stairs!” Sophia suddenly gasped, pointing toward the dark stairwell behind them.
Heavy, unhurried footsteps echoed on the concrete steps above. Someone was descending into the basement, and they didn’t use the hidden pantry door—they had come in through the exterior bulkhead doors on the side of the house.
Julian’s breath caught in his throat. He reached into his tuxedo jacket, but his hands found only empty air where his pocket square and wallet usually rested.
“Stay behind the desk, Sophia. Do not make a sound,” Julian ordered in a fierce whisper, slipping a heavy steel paperweight from the desk into his hand.
The heavy footsteps reached the bottom of the landing. A tall silhouette stepped out from the shadows, bathed in the green glow of the server racks.

It wasn't a police officer, and it wasn't one of Marcus's hitmen. It was Arthur.
