Chapter 14 - The Final Confession

Arthur stood at the base of the stairs, his right arm still bound tightly in the white bandage, but his posture lacked the frantic, terrified edge he had displayed in the living room upstairs. In his left hand, he held a heavy tactical flashlight, its bright beam cutting across the dark basement before settling squarely on Julian’s face.

“How did you get out of police custody?” Julian demanded, stepping in front of the desk to shield Sophia from view, gripping the heavy steel paperweight like a club.

Arthur let out a dry, mirthless chuckle, shaking his head slowly.

“Police custody? Julian, please. Those cops outside are on the payroll. They didn't take us to jail; they drove us around the block and let us out through the alley,” Arthur said casually, stepping closer into the light. “Eleanor is already on a private jet. I stayed behind because I realized something important.”

Julian’s eyes narrowed, his knuckles white around the metal paperweight.

“What could you possibly want that’s worth coming back here for?” Julian asked, keeping his voice dangerously low.

“My cut,” Arthur replied simply, his dark eyes locking onto Julian with chilling clarity. “Eleanor left me high and dry. She took the offshore credentials and promised to wire my share once she landed in Zurich. But she blocked my number five minutes ago.”

Julian stared at the younger man, sensing the desperate, erratic energy vibrating beneath Arthur’s calm exterior.

“You’re barking up the wrong tree, Arthur. I don’t have the money. Eleanor took it all,” Julian said firmly.

“She took the shell accounts, maybe. But the master server—the root node that controls the entire network authentication protocol—is right here in this room,” Arthur said, pointing a finger directly at the oak desk behind Julian. “You built the system, Julian. You can unlock the main vault and transfer my share right now, or I swear to God I’ll walk over there, pull that little girl out from behind that desk, and finish what I started upstairs.”

Sophia let out a tiny, frightened gasp, pulling the woolen blanket tighter around her shoulders.

Julian’s blood ran cold. He looked at the keyboard beneath his hands. The master sequence prompt was still blinking on the monitor.

“Step away from the console, Julian,” Arthur commanded, taking another step forward and pulling a heavy hunting knife from his waistband, the steel blade catching the emerald light.

Julian raised his hands slowly, stepping sideways to keep Arthur’s attention entirely focused on him, away from Sophia.

“Alright, Arthur. Let’s talk about this,” Julian said smoothly, his fingers inching closer to the enter key on the master console behind his back.
