Chapter 9

The third strike against the front door sounded like a small explosive charge, blowing the deadbolts clean out of their reinforced frames with a deafening metallic screech. Heavy boots thudded against the hardwood floor of the foyer, moving with the cold, calculated synchronization of professional security contractors. These weren't street thugs or desperate henchmen; these were elite operatives trained in corporate extraction and asset retrieval, wearing unmarked tactical gear and carrying suppressed submachine guns.
Inside the study, Arthur stood statue-still beside the heavy mahogany door, his breathing slow and measured, drawing on decades of survival instincts honed during his early days in industrial security before he ever built his shipping empire. He knew the layout of the house better than anyone; every blind spot, every shadow, every creak in the floorboards was etched into his memory.
A gloved hand grasped the brass handle of the study door, turning it slowly. The latch clicked.
Arthur didn't wait for them to fully enter. With a burst of explosive speed, he kicked the door inward with full force, catching the lead operative squarely in the chest and sending him crashing backward into the hallway wall. Before the second operative could raise his weapon, Arthur stepped out of the threshold, bringing the heavy butt of his revolver down in a swift, devastating arc across the man’s helmeted shoulder, dropping him instantly to the floor.
"Clara, now!" Arthur shouted over the commotion, not looking back as he fired two warning shots into the ceiling to deter any reinforcement from pushing up the main staircase.
Clara didn't hesitate. She grabbed the secure hard drive and the satellite phone from the desk, sprinting toward the hidden utility panel behind the bookshelf. With a sharp tug, the wooden panel swung inward, revealing the dark, concrete-lined stairwell leading down toward the boathouse and the lake exit. As she plunged into the cool, damp darkness of the tunnel, the distant sound of shouting echoed from the front foyer.

Arthur backed slowly into the study, keeping his weapon trained on the hallway as three more operatives rushed the stairwell, their flashlights cutting sharp white beams through the swirling dust. He fired a controlled shot into the light fixture above them, plunging the hallway into absolute darkness. In the confusion of the sudden blackout, Arthur slipped through the secondary access door behind his desk, sealing the heavy steel latch behind him just as a burst of suppressed gunfire chewed through the drywall where he had been standing a second before.
