Chapter 6

The security monitor on Arthur’s desk chimed softly, displaying a live feed from the front gate camera. A sleek, black sedan had pulled up to the stone pillars, idling quietly in the morning mist. No one stepped out immediately. The tinted windows absorbed the early sunlight, concealing whoever sat inside. Arthur stood up from his desk, his hand instinctively brushing against the heavy brass paperweight before he checked the secure intercom linked to the perimeter sensors.

"Dad," Clara whispered, stepping into the doorway of the study, her knuckles white as she gripped the fabric of her blanket. "Is it him?"

"No," Arthur replied, his eyes locked on the monitor. "Vance wouldn't roll up in a standard corporate sedan; he's too arrogant to move without a motorcade of lawyers and security contractors. This is someone else. Someone sent to test the waters."

The intercom crackled with static before a smooth, rehearsed voice filtered through the speakers. "Mr. Sterling, my name is Julian Vance. I am Richard’s legal counsel and senior partner at Vance & Associates. I believe it is in everyone's best interest if we have a brief, civilized conversation regarding the misunderstanding at the estate last night."

Arthur felt a cold smile touch the corners of his mouth. Julian Vance—Richard’s older brother and the architectural mastermind behind the firm's complex legal loopholes. Julian was sharper, colder, and far more dangerous than Richard ever aspired to be. Richard was a blunt instrument of domestic terror; Julian was the silencer attached to the weapon.

"There is no misunderstanding, counselor," Arthur spoke directly into the intercom mic, his voice carrying an icy, authoritative weight. "Your brother assaulted my daughter, embezzled funds through corporate fraud, and attempted to cover his tracks with blackmail. I suggest you turn your car around before federal investigators arrive to impound your vehicle as part of an active racketeering probe."

There was a long silence on the other line. The sedan remained idling at the gate, its exhaust pipes puffing faint white clouds into the crisp morning air. On the monitor, the rear door finally clicked open, and a tall man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped out. Julian Vance did not look like a panicked defense attorney; he looked like a predator assessing a wounded animal, his movements deliberate and unhurried as he adjusted his cuffs and looked directly into the camera lens.

"Mr. Sterling," Julian's voice came through the speaker again, lower this time, stripped of its corporate varnish. "You are playing a game with rules you do not fully understand. Richard is a volatile man, yes, but he is a symptom of a much larger ecosystem. If you push this forward, you aren't just destroying my brother—you are dismantling a financial foundation that supports hundreds of innocent families, including your own shipping logistics network. Think very carefully about your next move."

Arthur didn't blink. He reached out and pressed the master switch, cutting the intercom feed instantly. He turned to Clara, who was watching him with a look of pure terror, recognizing the subtle, devastating threat embedded in Julian’s polished words.
