Chapter 5

Dawn broke over the tranquil surface of the lake, painting the sky in pale shades of amber and bruised violet. Inside the study, the secure laptop hummed quietly as the final gigabytes of data finished verifying their checksums. Clara sat curled in an oversized leather armchair, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket, her eyes heavy with exhaustion but wide with nervous anticipation. The adrenaline that had sustained her through the night was beginning to fade, leaving behind a dull ache in her bones and a profound, hollow numbness.

Arthur stood by the window, watching the mist rise off the water. His phone, resting face-down on the mahogany desk, buzzed violently against the wood. He didn't pick it up immediately. He let it ring out once, twice, three times, watching the caller ID flash an unknown local number that he knew belonged to a burner phone registered under a corporate alias.

The phone buzzed again. This time, it was Marcus calling from his secure line.

Arthur lifted the receiver. "Talk to me."

"We hit his primary server farm in the financial district twenty minutes ago," Marcus reported, his voice crisp and laced with satisfaction. "Our guys bypassed the firewall using an administrative backdoor Vance forgot he left open from his startup days. We’ve frozen all outgoing wire transfers to his Cayman accounts. As of six minutes ago, Vanguard Global's internal audit committee received an anonymous package containing the preliminary financial discrepancies."

Arthur let out a slow, measured breath, feeling a fraction of the heavy armor around his chest loosen. "And Vance himself?"

"He’s scrambling," Marcus said with a dry chuckle. "According to our surveillance feeds on his penthouse, he’s already burned through three different burner phones trying to contact his offshore associates, but all their communication channels are dark. He knows something is coming, but he doesn't know where the strike is originating from. He thinks it's a rival corporate takeover, not a father cleaning house."

"Keep the pressure on," Arthur instructed. "Don't let him breathe. If he tries to liquidate his personal assets or book a private flight out of the country, I want local customs alerted immediately through our federal contacts."

"Consider it done. I'm sending a secure courier to your location to pick up the master drive with the cracked phone data. Hand it off to no one else, Artie. Use the passphrase we agreed on."

Arthur clicked off the connection and turned to face Clara. She was watching him with wide, searching eyes, her face pale in the morning light.

"Was that Marcus?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.

"It was," Arthur said, walking over and kneeling beside her chair. He took her cold hands in his. "The first phase is complete. Vance’s financial accounts are frozen, and his primary servers are quarantined. He’s running out of time, Clara. The glass fortress he built is about to cave in on him."
