Chapter 15
The golden light of the late afternoon sun washed over the wooden dock at Sandy Cove, turning the ripples on the water into a shimmering sheet of amber and gold. Clara stood at the edge of the pier, wearing a simple cotton jacket over her beige loungewear, breathing in the fresh, clean air that carried no trace of fear or manipulation.
Arthur walked down the wooden planks beside her, carrying a small cardboard box containing the shattered remains of the smartphone that had started it all. He stopped at the edge of the water, looking down at the cracked screen reflecting the evening sky.
"What do you want to do with this?" Arthur asked softly, holding out the box. "Federal forensics are finished with it. We can keep it as evidence for the civil trial, or we can let it go."
Clara reached into the box, picking up the cracked device. The screen was dead, the internal electronics fried, and the spiderweb fractures mapped across the glass like an old scar. She held it in her palm for a long moment, feeling the jagged edges one last time without flinching. Then, with a smooth, effortless motion, she tossed the phone out over the water.
It cut through the air in a clean arc before splashing softly into the deep water of the lake, sinking quickly out of sight into the quiet mud below.

Arthur wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close in a strong, protective embrace that needed no words. They stood there together on the dock as the sun dipped below the tree line, painting the sky in brilliant shades of violet and crimson. The glass fortress Julian and Richard had tried to build to contain them had shattered into a million pieces, leaving only the open horizon and an unbreakable bond between a father and his daughter. The nightmare was finally behind them, and for the first time in their lives, the road ahead was entirely theirs to write.
