passageway

Chapter 10

The damp, earthy scent of the subterranean utility tunnel filled Clara’s lungs as she ran blindly through the absolute darkness, her hand trailing along the cold concrete wall for guidance. Behind her, the muffled sounds of shouting and the sporadic pop of suppressed gunfire echoed down the concrete corridor, reminding her that there was no margin for error. Her legs burned with exhaustion, but the raw terror that had paralyzed her in Richard’s penthouse had transformed into a fierce, burning resolve. She was no longer the cowering woman in beige loungewear hiding under a blanket; she was the survivor carrying the final key to her tormentor's destruction.

Emerging from the tunnel into the dim, cavernous interior of the boathouse, Clara slammed the heavy iron locking bar down into its reinforced bracket, securing the passage behind her. The morning fog still blanketed the surface of the lake, wrapping the wooden dock and the moored speedboat in a protective shroud of gray mist.

She fumbled in her pocket for the ignition key hidden beneath the boat's dashboard, her fingers shaking as she inserted the metal key into the ignition switch. The engine sputtered once, twice, before roaring to life with a deep, throbbing growl that reverberated off the wooden rafters of the boathouse. She cast off the mooring lines, letting the heavy ropes splash into the dark water, and pushed the throttle forward.

The speedboat surged out of the boathouse slip, cutting a clean white wake through the glassy surface of the lake as it broke into the open water. The crisp morning wind whipped her hair across her face, but she didn't flinch. She pulled the satellite phone from her pocket, punching in the pre-programmed emergency frequency Marcus had provided her just hours earlier.

"This is Clara Sterling," she spoke into the receiver, her voice clear, steady, and devoid of tremor. "My father’s house has been breached by corporate extraction teams. I have the master drive and the cracked smartphone. I am heading toward the extraction point at Sandy Cove. Tell the federal task force the window is now."

A sharp, clear voice crackled back through the static. "Copy that, Miss Sterling. Federal agents are mobilizing toward Sandy Cove as we speak. Stay on the water, keep your transponder off, and do not dock until you see the flashing amber signal."

Clara clicked off the connection, slipping the satellite phone back into her pocket. She looked back toward her father's estate, where faint plumes of smoke were beginning to rise above the tree line. Arthur was still back there, holding the line against men who had underestimated a father's wrath and a daughter's will to survive.
