Chapter 2

The oak doors of Arthur’s lakeside home slammed shut, the heavy deadbolts sliding into place with a definitive, mechanical thud. For the first time in over two years, Clara stood in the foyer of her childhood home without looking over her shoulder for signs of surveillance. The scent of aged cedar, old books, and roasting coffee beans immediately grounded her, sweeping away the sterile, suffocating aroma of Richard’s minimalist penthouse. Yet, the physical safety of the house could not entirely chase away the phantom shadows that clung to her edges. Every creak of the floorboards made her flinch, her muscle memory still wired for defense.
Arthur guided her gently toward the kitchen, sitting her down at the heavy oak table where they had shared countless breakfasts before Richard entered her life. He poured a mug of hot chamomile tea, sliding it between her trembling palms. While Clara wrapped her fingers around the ceramic warmth, Arthur walked over to the secure wall safe hidden behind a mahogany panel. He spun the dial with practiced precision, retrieving a secure, military-grade external hard drive and a clean, unlinked laptop that had never touched a public network.
"We need to create three independent backups before sunrise," Arthur said, his tone deadpan and businesslike. He placed the laptop on the table, opening the metal casing with clinical efficiency. "Richard has friends in high places—law enforcement, municipal courts, corporate security firms. If we go through standard channels immediately, his people might intercept the evidence before it ever reaches a federal prosecutor."
Clara took a slow sip of the tea, letting the warmth steady her vocal cords before she spoke. "He didn't just abuse me, Dad. I found out three weeks ago that he was using my signature as a silent partner to funnel dirty money from the firm's acquisition accounts into offshore shell corporations. When I threatened to pull out and audit the books legally, that’s when the threats started. The isolation, the phone monitoring, the physical intimidation. He needed me legally bound to him so I couldn't testify against him under spousal privilege."
Arthur paused, his hand hovering over the laptop keyboard. A muscle twitched along his jawline. The sheer depravity of Richard’s scheme stunned even him, a man who had spent three decades navigating the ruthless waters of industrial logistics. Richard hadn't just manipulated Clara’s heart; he had weaponized her trust to construct a legal shield for his own criminal enterprise.

"Spousal privilege has strict limitations when ongoing criminal conspiracy and physical endangerment are documented," Arthur replied quietly, his eyes locking onto his daughter's. "And that cracked smartphone in your hand holds every piece of evidence we need to tear that privilege to shreds. Let's pull the files."
