Chapter 7

The digital courier arrived precisely at noon, swapping the master drive containing Clara's evidence for a clean encrypted packet before disappearing back into the metropolitan traffic. Inside the study, Arthur and Clara sat in silence, reviewing a secondary set of financial documents Marcus’s forensic team had managed to pull from Vanguard Global’s historical archives. The data went back nearly a decade, long before Richard had taken over executive operations—back when Julian Vance had first established the firm's offshore holding companies.

"It was never just Richard's scheme," Clara said softly, her finger tracing a series of routing numbers that connected Vanguard Global to a dormant shell corporation registered in the British Virgin Islands under Julian's personal name. "Richard was just the frontman. He took the operational risks, he managed the dirty work, and he took the hits when things went sideways. Julian was the architect. He set up the entire systemic siphon."

Arthur leaned back in his leather chair, rubbing his temples as the headache he had been fighting all morning finally began to spike. "That explains why Julian showed up at our gate so quickly. He wasn't just trying to protect his brother from a domestic dispute; he was protecting himself from an unravelling audit that leads straight to his own offshore accounts. If Richard goes down for embezzlement, the entire house of cards collapses, and Julian's legal career goes down with it."

"So what do we do now?" Clara asked, her voice steadying as the fear gave way to a cold, hard determination. "If Julian controls the legal defense fund and has connections throughout the district court system, standard prosecution might get bogged down in endless motions and appeals."

"We don't give them time to file motions," Arthur said, reaching for his desk phone to dial Marcus back. "We skip the local magistrates entirely. Marcus has a contact within the Department of Justice’s elite financial crimes task force based out of Washington. We hand them the master drive directly, bypassing the state jurisdiction where Julian has influence."

Before Arthur could press the call button, the power in the house suddenly flickered. The overhead lamps buzzed, sputtered, and died, plunging the study into the dim, amber glow of the emergency backup generator. Simultaneously, the security monitors on the desk went black, their blue indicator lights blinking out one by one in rapid succession.

Arthur stood up instantly, his hand moving to the heavy drawer where he kept his service revolver. "Stay here, Clara. Do not move from this chair."

"Dad, what’s happening?" she asked, her voice catching in her throat as the digital clock on the desk went dark.

"A targeted EMP pulse or a hard-line local grid shutdown," Arthur said, his eyes scanning the darkened hallway outside the study. "They aren't waiting for a court battle anymore. They’re coming to clean house."
