Chapter 8

Julianna folded the letter and slid it carefully back into its envelope, tucking it into the inner pocket of her jacket alongside Agent Hayes’s cardholder. She reached into the titanium lockbox and picked up the matte-black solid-state drive. It felt impossibly light, yet it held the concentrated weight of years of corporate espionage, embezzlement, and premeditated murder.

"Is that it?" Hayes asked quietly, stepping closer to inspect the drive without touching it.

"Yes," Julianna replied, her voice steady and resolute. "Everything we need to dismantle his entire network is right here. Every shell company, every bribe, every falsified asset transfer."

Hayes nodded, pulling a secure, military-grade data bag from his briefcase. He held it open for her, and she dropped the drive inside with a soft click. "The federal prosecutor's office has already prepared the paperwork to expand the charges against Richard. Once we mirror this drive and verify the encryption keys, his bail hearing tomorrow morning will not just be denied—it will become a total surrender."

They left the vault and walked back out into the grand foyer, the heavy silence of the manor pressing down on them. Julianna paused by the large bay window overlooking the cliffs. The ocean below churned with white foam against the jagged rocks. It was here, she realized, that Victor had fought for his life before being ambushed and cast into the freezing depths. The realization didn't bring tears; it brought a cold, clarifying anger that fueled every step she took.

"We need to return to the city," Julianna said, turning away from the window. "There are people who backed Richard, people who funded his campaigns and helped him launder the stolen capital. They think they can distance themselves now that he's arrested."

Hayes offered a thin, approving smile. "The prosecutor's list of co-conspirators is already growing, Julianna. Your testimony, combined with the contents of that drive, will ensure that no one who aided him escapes accountability."

As they stepped out of Vance Manor and into the crisp autumn air, Agent Hayes's secure phone vibrated in his hand. He glanced at the screen, his expression tightening slightly.

"We have a development," Hayes said, looking up at Julianna. "Richard's defense team has just filed an emergency motion demanding an immediate closed-door hearing, claiming the evidence presented at the church was illegally obtained and constitutes entrapment."

Julianna felt a cold spike of adrenaline, but her resolve did not waver. She walked firmly toward the waiting SUV, pulling open the door herself. "Then let's make sure our case is completely airtight before tomorrow morning. We don't give them an inch."
