Chapter 5

The silver-pinned man signaled to his associates with a subtle twitch of his wrist. Two of the men in black stepped forward, flanking Richard on either side, their grips firm and inescapable as they grabbed the groom by the biceps and hoisted him upright. Richard struggled weakly, his polished shoes dragging across the marble floor, leaving faint black scuff marks near the crushed white rose petals.

"You can't do this! Do you know who my lawyers are? You'll pay for this!" Richard shrieked, his voice losing all pretense of dignity as he was hauled away from the altar and toward the heavy oak doors.

"Your lawyers are currently answering questions from the federal task force that has already seized your accounts and frozen your assets," the silver-pinned man replied evenly, not even breaking his stride as he watched Richard being dragged out. "The Vance estate is fully recovered. And Victor's final wishes regarding your corporate holdings are now being executed."

The heavy oak doors swung open wide, letting in a rush of cold autumn wind that swept through the cathedral, swirling the scattered white flower petals across the stone floor like autumn leaves. As Richard was forced out into the bright morning light, the flashing red and blue lights of unmarked federal vehicles painted the stone pillars with an urgent, pulsing glow. The remaining guests scrambled toward the side exits, desperate to escape the fallout of a scandal that would dominate the evening news cycles across the nation.

Julianna stood alone in the center of the vast, echoing church. The silence returned, heavier and more profound than before. She looked down at the open steamer trunk, then at the waterlogged journal still clutched in her hand. Her wedding dress felt heavy and suffocating now, a costume from a play that had turned into a nightmare.

The silver-pinned man remained behind, standing near the baptismal font, watching her with a quiet, respectful distance. He reached into his coat pocket and withdrew a small, leather cardholder, extending it toward her without taking a step closer.

"My name is Agent Hayes, Julianna," he said gently, his voice carrying a warmth that contrasted sharply with his earlier cold demeanor. "Victor left specific instructions with our firm. If anything ever happened to him, and if my suspicions about Richard's sudden wealth proved correct, this trunk and its contents were to be handed directly to you."

Julianna raised her gaze from the trunk to meet Hayes's eyes. She didn't take the cardholder immediately. "Why didn't you stop the wedding sooner? Why let it get to this point?"

Hayes sighed, his expression softening with genuine empathy. "We needed ironclad proof of Richard's psychological control and public complicity. A quiet arrest would have allowed his legal team to bury the asset recovery in civil court for years. Bringing him down here, in front of his peers, shattered his network of protection permanently. He had no allies left in that room the moment the trunk was opened."

Julianna looked back down the long, empty aisle where Richard had dragged her only minutes ago. The marble floor was marked with dust, scuffs, and petals. She took a slow, deep breath, feeling the air fill her lungs entirely for the first time in over a year. The terror was gone, replaced by a cold, burning clarity. She reached out and took Agent Hayes's cardholder, slipping it safely into the pocket hidden within the heavy folds of her white silk skirt.
