Chapter 7

Vance Manor stood on a jagged cliff overlooking the turbulent grey waters of the Atlantic. The sprawling stone architecture, once a symbol of generational wealth and security, now felt like a mausoleum. Agent Hayes used a physical brass key to unlock the heavy front doors, the hinges groaning in protest against the salty sea air that constantly battered the coastline.
Inside, the grand foyer was dark, the heavy velvet drapes drawn shut across the floor-to-ceiling windows. Dust motes danced lazily in the thin beams of light that managed to pierce the gloom. Julianna walked past the familiar bronze statues and oil paintings of her ancestors, feeling as though she were walking through a museum of a life she used to know.
"The study is down the hall," Hayes murmured, leading the way with quiet efficiency.
The study smelled of aged leather, pipe tobacco, and old paper—the comforting scent of her childhood. Victor’s mahogany desk still held his reading glasses and a stack of unanswered correspondence, left precisely as they had been on the night he vanished. Hayes approached the heavy oak bookshelf behind the desk and pressed a hidden brass lever disguised as a spine of an encyclopedia. With a low mechanical hum, the entire bookcase swung outward, revealing a reinforced steel vault door set deep into the stone wall.
"This is it," Hayes said, stepping aside to give her room. "The biometric scanner is right here."
Julianna stepped forward. She pressed her right thumb firmly against the glass plate of the scanner. A soft blue light swept across her fingerprint, followed by a series of rapid beeping sounds. A heavy pneumatic hiss echoed through the small room as the internal locking mechanisms disengaged, and the thick steel wheel spun outward on its own.
Hayes pulled the heavy door open. Inside the brightly lit vault, rows of safety deposit boxes and neatly labeled ledgers lined the walls. But in the center of the room, resting on a velvet-lined pedestal, was a small, titanium lockbox.
Julianna reached out and unlocked the box with a physical key she had found hidden inside the back cover of Victor’s journal. Inside lay a single, matte-black solid-state drive and a handwritten letter bearing her name in her uncle's precise handwriting.

She picked up the letter, her fingers trembling slightly as she unfolded the thick parchment paper.
“My dearest Julianna,” she read silently in her mind, her eyes scanning the dark ink. “If you are reading this, it means the worst has come to pass, and Richard’s true nature has been revealed. Do not mourn me for long; instead, use the contents of this drive to tear down every brick of the corrupt foundation he tried to build over my grave. You are stronger than you know, and you are the true heir to everything I built.”
