Chapter 2

The heavy thud of leather-soled shoes hitting the marble entryway silenced whatever retort Richard had been preparing to hurl down at Julianna. The guests in the wooden pews stopped recording, their collective breath catching as the formidable line of men in black suits advanced up the central aisle. At the head of the procession walked a tall, lean man with sharp features and cold, piercing eyes. He carried no weapon, yet his presence commanded absolute, terrifying authority. The air in the cathedral seemed to drop ten degrees, the bright morning light suddenly feeling like the harsh glare of an interrogation room.

Richard spun around on his heel, his anger momentarily faltering, replaced by a deep, frantic confusion as he squinted against the light to identify the intruders. His jaw worked silently before he found his voice, stepping away from Julianna as if distancing himself from a crime scene.

"Who invited you? Security! What kind of sick joke is this?" Richard shouted, his voice cracking slightly on the final syllable, betraying the first genuine fracture in his polished facade.

The tall man in the lead did not break stride. He stopped twenty feet away, his expression entirely neutral, a stark contrast to Richard’s unraveled state. He reached inside his tailored jacket and produced a heavy, dark manila folder, holding it with two fingers as if it were contaminated. Behind him, the other men fanned out silently, blocking every exit, their eyes scanning the congregation with practiced, clinical detachment.

Julianna remained seated on the floor, her wedding dress pooling around her like seafoam on a rocky shore. The adrenaline was beginning to fade, leaving a hollow ache in her bones, but her mind was fiercely sharp. She watched Richard’s face lose its color, the arrogant flush turning into a sickly, grayish pallor. Richard knew those men. Or, more accurately, he knew the man they represented.

"You're trespassing," Richard stammered, taking a step backward, his polished Italian leather shoes slipping slightly on a crushed white rose petal. "This is a private ceremony. Get out of my church before I have you all arrested."

The leader of the men in black offered a thin, humorless smile that did not reach his eyes. He stepped forward into a patch of golden sunlight streaming through the stained-glass windows, casting a long, dark shadow toward the altar.

"There is no wedding today, Richard," the man said, his voice deep, resonant, and impossibly calm. "There hasn't been a valid union in this family for over a year. And as for trespassing, we are simply returning what belongs to you."

The man gestured subtly with his left hand. Two of the agents behind him stepped forward, carrying a long, heavy wooden case between them, draped simply in a dark wool blanket. The silence in the church became absolute. Even the softest breathing of the terrified guests seemed to vanish. Richard stared at the case, his pupils dilating as his hands began to tremble uncontrollably at his sides. He took a staggering half-step forward, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, utterly paralyzed by the dark geometry of the object resting before him.
